Smart fares Italian trains

Can anyone tell me the difference between Smart fare 1 and Smart fare 2? And do the Smart fares only allow access to second class?

HI Z,

SM1 and SM2 are different rates - that's all. Buy the cheapest available.

Depends on what is offered on the train.

Sometimes there are SMs for dbl sleeper cabins in addition to T6, T4 and T3 berths.

Ira, last year there was some talk about the smart fare only being allowed for use by Italian or EU residents. I don't remember exactly how this was to work. Do you know if this happened?
