Small cities near Rome

Im leaving for a week in rome tomorrow and was wondering if anybody had some suggestions for a day trip to a small city near rome, kinda to get away from all the action of the big city.

Thanks a lot

I think Tivoli is a nice day day trip, for the gardens as well as for the little town itself. You can also visit Hadrian's Villa on the same day.

Orvieto is an hour away by train and well worth the visit.

JW - You've had two good suggestions already.

CASTEL GANDOLFO (- the pope's summer residence) also makes a nice trip (- about 45 mins from Rome). You could combine it with one or two of the other 'Colli Albani' hill towns.

A bit further afield, ASSISI is also a wonderful day trip from Rome - about 2 hours each way.

Hope this helps ...

I second the Orvieto suggestion. If you go, have lunch at San Patrizio,it's wonderful.
