Going to be in Ireland in May for first time, one of the nights I am looking at staying in Sligo, the books I have don't list many options= where would you recommend to stay?? Thanks...

This may sound strange, but after a few days in Sligo, I don't have any suggestions.

My recommendation is to find a good B and B, but make sure it is close to a bus line into the city center.

We took a bus tour from the tourist office. The tour was fine, but the demand for the service was so low that my wife and I paid for 3 people so we could go. (Two was not enough.) The fee was not much and we had come a long ways to see the area where some of my wife's paternal grandmother family had lived. It was a "roots" trip, and a few euro was not going to stop us because there was no viable alternative!

We stayed in a B and B the name of which I cannot remember.

The main thing I remember is that the train from Dublin was dirty and when we got to the train station I had to go out in the street and flag down a taxi, who already had a fare. He said wait, and he would be back for me. He was as good as his word! But the hustle and bustle of Dublin was not evident in Sligo.

I think you will enjoy the visit, if you adjust your expectations.

By the way, we ate a lot of pizza! Hard to find a decent restaurant that was not full of smoke. I hope the smoking restrictions have ameliorated that particular problem for those sensitive to tobacco smoke.

I will say this: The place was clean and the owners did not bother us. On the other hand, they were not helpful enough in my opinion. Perhaps I was expecting too much.

The area is quiet and we walked to town because it was an easy downhill walk. We returned on the bus as I recall.

There are a few items of interest to see in Sligo. For us, as I said, it was a "roots" trip because my wife's grandmother was born there.

There are other B and B options, but I caution you: If you are going in the summer, even as late as mid September, places book up quickly. We tried two or three places before finding a vacancy at TreeTops.

If the first place you call does not have vacancy, ask for a referral. That is how we found TreeTops. Another B and B owner suggested it because he was booked solid for our period of time.

I have a whole list of places to stay in Sligo since we will be staying there for 3 nights in July.

I think it depends upon which area of Sligo you want to stay in and whether you'll have a car.

Millhouse B&B was a top choice at 32E pp in Ballymote

Temple House Castle

Mackree Castle which is less expensive than Temple House Castle

Ramada in Sligo town

You can also go to tripadvisor.com and type in Sligo hotels and you will see a good list of them and people's opinions about them.

Town and country has a list of bed and breakfasts, but not an entire list.

We stayed at Temple House this past summer and throughly enjoyed it. It is a Georgian mansion and not a castle. While more expensive than B&B's, we still found it one of our less expensive stays, especially when considering value for money. Evening meals can be included.

I too am looking into Sligo a we may be there either one or two nights in April. I have found a couple of places and thought to pass them to you for a look see as well.

Trip advisor seems to list Temple House as #1 and Treetops as #2.

Not sure why you have picked Sligo - the town is a cross roads of cars going through it & traffic is constantly jammed up in the town. Parking is extremely hard to find but it is the major shopping centre in the area. As a tourist I would avoid staying in the town centre - I would suggest the outlying towns are more suited - Strandhill & Rosses Point for example.
There are plenty of things to do in Sligo but you are only stopping 1 night & it is hard to suggest any one thing under the circumstances. Parkes castle gives an historic feel to the area & the drive is scenic, Strandhill golf course, surfing or Queen Maeve's grave, Yeats scenic drive for the literary folks, Rosses Point for a quiet sea side town with a small island to visit when the tide is out.
I have often been to Sligo & been to the above and have strolled the river bank which is now a pleasant walk, my kids have enjoyed the swimming baths there. We have watched Shane of Westlife's house being built over the years & may even have been served by him at his mother cafe in Sligo before he was in Westlife - it is now his sister's designer boutique.
Lyons cafe would be a must for a nostalgic afternoon tea.

We've stayed three times at the Sligo Park Hotel. They have a nice restaurant and Pub, as well as a leisure center/indoor pool.
