SKIING IN THE SUMMER

I AM LOOKING FOR INFORMATION REGARDING SUMMER SKIING IN THE ALPS. HAS ANYONE BEING SKIING IN THE ALPS DURING THE EARLY SUMMER MONTHS (MAY/JUNE) AND HOW WAS IT? SOME OF THE TRAVEL BOOKS INDICATE THERE ARE PLACES TO SKI, BUT I AM CURIOUS ABOUT SKI CONDITIONS, AND WHETHER IT'S WORTH IT. THANKS

I can only tell you about Switzerland. Best summer ski stations are Saas Fee and Zermatt (I'd prefer Zermatt). You'll find round 25km of ski-runs there, in Zermatt mot. In Zermatt, a cable car takes you up to 3800m, in Saas Fee an underground-funicular railway goes to 3400m. Of course these glacier-skiruns are flatter than other pists you have in winter.
Weahter should be nice in May/June. Ski conditions are good in the morning, in the afternoons temperatures often are too high. So you go up at 7am and down soon after midday.
Pists will not be crowded, there are not as many skiers as in winter.
Basically, I agree with Mathias. Anyway, for the reasons he mentioned, I should think in general skiing in winter is more fun. But it really depends on how good a skiier you are. If you're a good one, I think you'll be bored by the flat pistes. I was in Zermatt 3 years ago (in winter) and didn't like the glacier piste very much.

Tammy,
I've been to Zermatt (one of my favorite places) in the summer, but haven't gone skiing, as I'm not really a skiier. But I want to give you the address of a great website about Zermatt which will give information on summer skiing conditions: http://www.ski-zermatt.com.

How about Mt Titis or Mt Pilatus? Is summer skiing possible there? esp in July. Thanks

There is summer skking on the Kitzsteinhorn (Kaprun) glacier near Zell am See in Austria. As you can imagine, it "crusty" in the morning, sort of sloppy in the afternoon. But it's fun.

Another place I know of is the glacier above Chamonix (in France. near Geneva Switzerland) , but I haven't skied that one, so I don't know much about conditions.
