Single traveling alone in Venice

Where is the best place (safest, best walking) for a single woman traveling alone to stay? Not familiar with Venice at all. Any recommendations for places to eat that contain gluten-free menu items?? I will be there two nights on my way south. Thanks

I cannot think of anywhere in Venice where you would not be safe. Donna Leon of Commissario Brunetti fame was on BBC Bookclub a few days ago talking about the crime rate in Venice: virtually no muggings or personal thefts, a very few housebreakings, approx one murder a year, usually solved within days.

As for gluten-free, not a problem either. Venice excels in seafood and polenta dishes.

Research your hotel carefully and make sure it is close to a vaporetto stop and has several restaurants/cafes near it and you will be more comfortable about going out in the evening.

Also, I would feel more at ease at a hotel where they had someone manning the front desk 24/7. Otherwise, be aware of your surroundings, relax and have a nice visit.

Safety isn't much of a problem, especially since the streets are so populated with tourists.

Wandering around is a popular pastime in Venice, but you may want to limit that to the daytime. Getting lost on one of the deserted alleyways at night probably isn't dangerous but can be a little spooky for a single person.

LouiseBez topped it to ask a different question - or maybe just a complain about hotel rates in Venice. Not sure.

Louise - you'll do better if you start a new thread w/ your specific question(s) instead of tacking on to an old thread. And if you do re-post give your budget.

Louise, you might try monastery/convents that offer rooms such as on this site:

Monasterstays is a reseller and marks up the price. It's cheaper to book directly with the convents. Some will have curfews. This one has 10:30 or 11 depending on season/

This one is 11.

This one has 31 singles.

Also look at sites like Lonely Planet and Time Out which caters to budget travelers. Eurocheapo might have some options too.

"Monasterstays is a reseller and marks up the price."

Good to know, thanks. It was more the concept I was suggesting than the site as I've never used it. I always hope an idea is something people will run with and not treat it too literally unless it's meant to be specific. I plan to look at your suggestions. kybourbon.
