How fast are the trains in europe, do you pay extra for the faster trains?

The trains in Europe run at all different speeds. Yes, in general, you pay more for the high-speed or rapid trains than you do for the slow, local lines.

Be certain to look at the schedule for each train. The one that leaves earlier may actually get to your destination later than the one that leaves 45 minutes later.

There are IC, Express, TGV, local and all the way down to milk run trains. Be sure you know before you pick one.

US

Also, I understand that you should make reservations ahead of time for seats on high speed trains like the TGV, unlike other trains where you pay a fair and take any seat you can find. Certain routes and times are very popular. If you cannot get a seat, that may change your travel plans drastically!
Matthew,

The fastest trains run at up to 300 km per hour. You must pay a supplement for these trains.

There is much more about European trains on my page at www.enjoy-europe.com/hte/chap17/rail.htm

John
