I love the way, when we asked for salt & pepper for a deli salad, the clerk said "NON, eet's een thayre" but then when my husband boards the bus w/ his walking stick, people practically push him into their seat rather than leave him standing.

I went to Paris for the first time last April...I fell in love from the minute we stepped out of the airport. All of these lovely thoughts have made me even more determined to spend my 30th birthday there next year!

Balletgirl reminded me of another..... mass at Sacre Couer. Friday afternoon at 3pm, we just happened to wander in as mass began. Doesn't matter if you are Catholic or not, it was beautiful, with nuns in full length white habits singing the responses.

1. I love the mornings. Standing by the windows of our 5th floor apartment and watching everything come to life.
2.Walking anywhere without a major plan.Following the Seine from the Eiffel Tower down to the Notre Dame.
3. All the Museums,Churches and Galleries,especially the Musee d'Orsay(those magnificent Monets) and the Musee Rodin.The Sacre Coeur and Sainte Chapelle.
4. The food,wine and cheese.
5. The architecture,facades,roof lines,colours of buildings,statues,
beautiful gates and fencing,window designs..everything really!

Pain au chocolat evere morning from a different boulangerie-pâtisserie.

Buying some other pastry to try during the day - macarons, tarts, cakes. Or a chocolate bar.

Roaming the streets, preferably of out of the way, untouristy neighbourhoods.

Beautiful! That's sort of what I was thinking when I first read it. I love reading this thread. It's like hearing the neighbors talk about how wonderful your children are.

I recently read Paul LaFarge's novel "Haussmann or The Distinction", and am following it with a big biography of Georges-Eugene Haussmann, Napoleon III's Prefect of the Seine, who executed the huge public works projects of the 1850s-60s. I will never see Paris through the same eyes. So next time I imagine my top Parisian pleasure may be re-knowing her ...

To all of you who mentioned St. Chappelle------we were there in Sept.'07 and the main front windows were out for restoration kind of a letdown). Are they back?

Only been there once; returning in a month. Looking forward to (among so many other things!):

Picnic on the lawn in front of Sacre Coeur (avec tout Paris, il me semble)

Real croissants

Wandering around Montmarte, the Seine, the Latin Quarter, and wherever my feet lead me

Being able to rely on the Metro to get me where I want to go quickly and easily

Being able to see something really beautiful, no matter where I am.

Can't wait!

I've a long weekend in April for a wedding.

I cannot wait to return 10 April. Reading this makes me "homesick" for Paris.

1. The smells. A great mix of perfume, people, cigarette smoke, bread baking, fromage and flowers.

2. Strolling the streets, just turning corners. I absolutely love just walking around, espcially in crowds.

3. Cafe creme at great leisure to start my day.

4. Shop windows. The very great variety of "things" to see there. I never ever get bored looking in shop windows in Paris.

5. People watching. Amazing.

I was in Paris during the last transport strike. My son asked me if I wanted to just come to Maui early due to the strike. He just cannot comprehend I need nothing "to do" in Paris. I am happy happy just walking from my apartment to Monoprix.
