Side trips from Londone

I would like to do a one day side trip from London to Stonehenge - Salisbury, I would like to know about public transportation and if it is possible about the fees that would have to pay?

When my husband & I were in London in Fall 2003, we took a day trip to Salisbury & Stonehenge.

IIRC, the train to Salisbury leaves out of Waterloo station and the "cheap day return" ticket cost us around 20GBP each in 2003. Maybe slightly more. That was buying the ticket the day of travel, travelling at off-peak hours and having a flexible return time. It takes about an hour and a half to get to Salisbury.

There is a bus from the Salisbury train station which will take you to Stonehenge. I don't remember right now what the name/number of the route was, but the fare was around 3GBP. I seem to remember it taking about 30 minutes on the bus to get to Stonehenge. I think it ran every half hour or so, so you can take however much time you want at Stonehenge then get the next bus back to Salisbury.

HTH!

Fares and schedules are at: www.nationalrail.co.uk
And don't neglect the city of Salisbury and its fantastic cathedral and do the little trek out into the cow meadows behind the cathedral to catch the classic view that Constable or was it Turner captured on canvasses and now world-famous paintings of the cathedral's soaring towers in the distance. Trains leave from Waterloo station in London.

Yes, indeed! The city of Salisbury is beautiful and the cathedral is both historically and architecturally significant.

Have you looked at www.londonwalks.com, they are a great walking tour company, and also have days out of London trips to Salisbury and Stonhenge. I've been on several of their walking tours in London, and they were fun. I believe they are the most highly regarded walking tour company in London.

I 3rd the London Walks suggestion. We went around Christmas 2004 and it was fantastic. The guide was excellent and the timing of the tour part (between train rides) couldn't have been better. Plenty of time to tour Salisbury, have lunch, and then off to Stonehenge. I especially enjoyed the history of the city and the Cathedral. Was a very easy and enjoyable day.
