Side trip to Florence, Venice
I am planning on a five day stay in Italy in late Februaury, and would like to spend a one day side trip in both Florence and Venice, by train. First, is this feasible, or will the time it takes to get there take all the time away? We are staying in Rome, and would like any tips as far as attractions in these cities as well as general rail info, like times and fares.

Thanks.

At the beginning of Nov. my husband & I went to Rome for a long weeks-end. On Saturday we took the 7:00AM train from Rome to Florence. It arrived at 8:30AM the cost round trip was about $100 for the both of us. My son was already in Rome so he made the train reservations for us before was arrived in Rome (but the train was not too crowded)I don't think you can possible do both Florence and Venice in one day unless you just want to take a quick look at both cities,it would really be impractical. We got to see alot in Florence because we made reservations at the Uffizi & the Acadamie to see David from America this saved waiting in line. The Uffizi line must have been about 2hrs. We saw the Duomo, and at least 2 or 3 other churches. In fact we did so much that we were suppose to stay & have dinner in Florence but by 6:00 we were so exhausted we took the 7:00 train back to Rome. I would definitely go see Florence when you're in Rome but it is too much to do both Florence & Venice in one day. I think it's better to do one really well & have the other to look forward to seeing another day. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
It is not feasible to get to both Florence and Venice in one day. If you choose to go to Venice, you may want to take the overnight train to Venice. Train 870 leaves the station in Rome at 11:20 P.M. and arrives in Venice at 6:40 A.M. the next morning. Train 873 leaves Venice at 10:50 P.M. and arrives back in Rome at 6:15 A.M. the next day. See http://www.fs-on-line.com/cgi-bin/fsqueryx?lang=en This has the advantage of using the sleeper (coucette) as a 'hotel' for two nights. Also, you will be able to wander around Venice at night for a while before you leave: an incomparable delight. Buona Fortuna.

It is NOT feasible to visit both in one day. Even though I happen to love Venice, because you are staying in Rome I would recommend going to Florence. Ruth was right--purchase your tickets to the Uffizi before you arrive. I stood in line for 2 hours. Buying the tickets before hand is a wise decision.
