Sicily - Valley of the Temples - Tour Guide?

Hello-

With a lot of help from people on this site, my husband and I are going to make our first trip to Sicily in early November. Among other things and places, we will be spending a night and most of the next day in Agrigento. Is a tour guide necessary or desirable for touring the Valley of the Temples?
Thank you in advance for your help.

I didn't find a guide necessary, but then I always read a LOT before visiting a site like that and I don't particularly like working with guides. Other people have the opposite preferences. No wrong answer, just a matter of personal choice.

We didn't use a tour guide nor did we feel we missed one. But it's up to you.

We had a tour guide but would have been happy to wander by ourselves. Our day tour was from Taormina and included the amazing mosaics at Piazza Armerina and (this is a big reason we don't like tours) most of the day was spent at Agrigento which we didn't enjoy much with very little time at the mosaics, where I could have spent hours. As others have said, it really depends on if you like guided tours. Personally I'd vote no.
