Sicily - International Driving Permit

We are traveling to Sicily in early November. We will be renting a car and want to have international driving permits (better safe than sorry!) - what is the easiest way to do this?
Thank you in advance

if your are in the US, go to your local AAA office. You don't need to be an AAA member.

The fee is $20, and you will either need to provide two (2) Passport photos or pay AAA for them ($8 members/$15 non-members). The permit is good for one year from the time your start of travel. You need to get it within six months of your travel start date. You, of course, also need to have your US drivers license. It is doubtful you will ever have to produce it (we have had many and we have never had to show ours to anyone) BUT they are required in Italy and will provide some extra peace of mind.

If you don't have an AAA office nearby you can download then mail in the application with a copy of your license.
You can create or print out passport photos at home, or at your local photo store or pharmacy. I take a photo against a light colored wall, then crop it to a square, then put 6 of these on a 4x6 jpg file that I send to CVS for 1hr printing and about 30c total cost. - cheaper than buying photo paper myself.

If you are American, you can't get it anyplace else but AAA, they have the contract to do that.

I used a photo booth at the mall to get my passport-sized photos for AAA. That was before I moved to Italy.
