Sicily in September
We are thinking of going to Sicily in September. How is the weather? Is it a very crowded time of year? Is two weeks a good amount of time to give ourselves for driving around the island?

I'd pick the last two weeks, not the first two in the hopes the heat has died down as well as the crowds. Both should have at least started by then, but don't expect anything to be deserted by a long shot.
I think 2 weeks is nice, but be sure to allow maybe three days to Lipari and boat out to the other Aeloian Islands from there. (Yes, they are part of Sicily). You can leave your car at Milazza where you get the boat over.

Some of my cousins (from Sicily) told me tht September is the most beautiful month there. However, they are from a little town in the Nebrodi Mts. where it is never extremely hot and fall and winter can be pretty cold. I've been to Sicily in early May, mid November, and twice a long time ago in the summer, but never in September.
Sicily is a large island and the largest region in Italy, and it is packed with fascinating and varied and very important things to see. You can have an enjoyable trip in two weeks, but you will not see all the highlights. If you like it, you may need to take many more trips to Sicily.

Here's my trip report for Sicily from March-April 2003:

I agree with cmt, I liked Sicily tremendously and can envision at least 2 more trips there.

September this year was VERY warm the first couple of weeks and then finally became lovely the next half, there are always tourists around but it would be a perfect time to come and the water is still very nice too. Are you going to be focusing on the East or West Coast? Two weeks is nice to have but it really depends what it is you are looking for, to decide (I agree with the above, you should check out those islands!)

Thank you all. It sounds as if the second two weeks are when we will go. I am not sure about where we will go. We are just beginning the thought process. We love ruins and exploring villages and towns. We may want to stay somewhere for several days, renting an apartment, and do some day trips. We really have a lot of thinking to do. I have copied out another Sicily series and that started me thinking. I have been told we should stay in Taornminia rather tha Sirakusa. Do you all agree?
