Fun in Sicily and/or Sardinia

My husband and I are celebrating our 30th anniversary in the spring. We are thinking about traveling to Sicily and/or Sardinia for 2 weeks. Any recommendations or concerns?

My concern is that you don't say what you're looking for. Two weeks on a romantic beach? That it?

Spring is still early for swimming.

My Grandmothers birthplace is Messina, Sicily. We visited 4 years ago and enjoyed Taormina as well. I guess what we're looking for are other interesting places in Sicily, to explore and enjoying the beaches. We would want to swim. Do you think two weeks in Sicily and Sardinia would be too long?We couldn't do the beach everyday, it would be boring and we're generally more active. Thanks so much!

The three weeks I spent in Sicily with husband and cousins seemed a week too short. We enjoyed the interior very much ... Gangi, Polizzi Generosa, Sperlinga, etc. in the Madonie Mts. It was low key, relaxing, and a nice contrast to the busy streets of Palermo and Syracusa with their wonderful sites and bustling street markets. The southern coast was entirely different, as was Erice and Trapani. It takes time to absorb Sicily. We rented a villa near Trecastagni for one week (near Taormina, at the base of Mt. Etna) and very much enjoyed the daily shopping, cooking, and side trips. The rest of the time was spent in hotels and an agriturismo. So, I don't think 2 weeks is too long at all! Enjoy!

I spent three weeks on Sicily, and could easily have spent longer. Trip report here: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...2&tid=35133064. Consider the Aeolian islands (which I didn't get to) for beach time.

I can't imagine ever being bored in Sicilia. I'm sure it's possible, but I think I'd be old and really gray before it hit me.

I recommend that you do some resarch on the so-called "baroque towns" of Sicilia -- Ragusa, Modica, Noto and a few others -- and consider visiting that region. There are pristine beaches quite near there.

Another idea might be to split your time between Palermo (and some day trips like Monreale and Cefalu) and then move onto the islands for a week, where you can experience volcanoes, villages, high-end resorts -- certainly anything you can find on Sardegna.

I've never been to Sardegna. I hope to go someday. But don't imagine you'll get bored in Sicilia, no matter where in the island you go.

If you are looking for a romantic vacation, you will find Siracuse along with all the south-eastern sicilian coast just astonishing!

Spring might be hot enough even to take a bath in the fantastic mediterranean sea. Visit Noto: a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The presence of architects like Rosario Gagliardi, Francesco Sortino and others, made the new Noto a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque.
Visit Avola: homeland of the gorgeous [and also my favourite ] red wine "Nero d'Avola" and its incredible canyons in Cava Grande.

Do not miss even Modica, Ragusa, Ispica, Caltagirone and so on...

I would suggest to visit the uncontaminated heavens of Vendicari, Isola di Capo Passero and Isola delle Correnti. That crystalline sea will capture your heart forever!

Congratulations for you anniversary and have fun in Sicily!
