Meg-
my best friend and I are doing sicily in november too and seem to be following the exact route that you guys are. The only thing we are sure of is that we will visit Stomboli on our way back to palermo. It is supposed to be amazing. Also, in Palermo we are told to visit the cripta dei cappucini - where preserved bodies hang on all the walls. not for those with weak stomachs. We are flying into palermo and driving around the island, spending nights at erice, agrigento, siricusa, taormina and back tp palermo. Lampedusa is an island off the southwest coast that looks amazing. We may try to fo that too if time permits.
Sorry I can't be of much help. I'm really hoping more people will post a reply to this. We'd love to get ideas on more "off the beaten track" destinations.
Have fun!
PS - when in nov. are you going? We'll be there the 9 - 18.

Meg: don't forget to stop in Taormina! I also recommend Segesta, Selinunte and the Roman Villa at Casale (6 kilometers from Piazza Armerina), all time permitting. Erice will be a disappointment if it's fogged in (as it often is in winter). Palermo deserves several days. Don't miss the Cappella Palatina, La Martorana Church, the Archeological Museum and the Galleria Abetellis. Spend at least half a day in Monreale, to see the stupendous Cathedral (the most fantastic south of Rome). The Cappuccini Convento and its mummies is something you'll never, ever forget. Be prepared.

Lucky you! I still have to wait untill June next year before I go back to Sicily. Certainly don't miss the Etna and Taormina. Also Cefalu is very pretty and is also typical Italian (tip for an excellent restaurant in Cefalu: La Brace, in one word: delicious!)Don't be afraid to ask the locals for information, cause the Sicilian are ver friendly and very proud of there beautiful island. Have a very nice trip!
