When I was in Paris in 2003, there was talk i the US about protesting going on. A friend and I were on the metro, and all I could see were crowds of people holding signs and shouting at our passing train. My friend plied my white knuckled hand from his arm and whispered "sportiff", and then explained they were soccer fans supporting their team. That was the closest to protest I've gotten on any of my visits.
