Should I still go to Italy next week fromNY? Still in shock...

I have a feeling you will tell me I should, and I want to, but Im very scared now. I I live in NY however I am vacationing down south at the moment, thankful that Im not there but wondering how many of my friends are hurt or dead.

I dont want to miss out on this trip but dont want to take unnecessary risk either. I also am in no hurry to go back to NY to breathe that toxic smoke that will envelope the whole island if the wind shifts (I understand now it's blowing east).

I also want to thank the non US citizens who've been nice enough to post condolences on this board. As our allies, your freedom was attacked today too.

I have tickets for Italy in November and my husband is begging me not to go. If he still feel the same as the trip gets closer, I will cancel the trip. No doubt whatsoever. As a NY resident, and an American citizen, I am totally devastated.

It all depends on your personal comfort. I'm scheduled to leave on Thursday and probably will if my flight isn't cancelled. I live in DC but will be connecting at JFK.

I pray to God that Americans will be given the strength to overcome the terrible fear that they all will have for a very long time to come.

I think that all our lives, and especially American lives, will be greatly changed by this black day.

God Bless America.

Meg - I'd go! I'd be nervous, maybe even scared, but I'd go. Part of terrorism is to make us afraid to do what we would otherwise. I refuse to let terrorists force me to change reasonable habits. If my flight went, I'd be on it. I work for the U.S. Government and am proud of it. As I'm proud to be an American.

Don't even think of cancelling. Don't give them the satisfaction. Isn't it part of the terrorist's intention? Be brave, speak up, and show who we are!!!!!!!
meg, is it possible that you can change the departure date? Perhaps you'd feel more comfortable at a later date. And I would think, perhaps naively, that the airlines would be very accomodating to their passengers at this time.
We are supposed to fly this Sat. to "just" Arizona, but I don't even want to think about getting on a plane at this point.

I'm sorry, but I don't think this should be a matter of bravery and "show them who we are." While I understand that we can't give in to terrorism, the reality is that there is a danger of epic proportions right now, and no vacation in the world is worth the risk at this most horrific time in our history.

I WAS leaving this Thrusday for Milan, I'm not sure when I'm going to go. It has nothing to do with bravery.

Jennifer: Your so called "danger of epic proportions" right now, is quite unreal. I believe you are safer travelling now, than before. Wouldn't you agree? How tight do you think security will be?
DellVec. Although I can relate to your statement, there is nothing you can do now. It is not within us to change past events, but we can make new events happen. It has to do with what we are and have been for years. We have an inner strenght and fiber these freedom haters lack.
I'd like to echo the previous sentiments. While I stated above that I will probably leave for Rome on Thursday, it has nothing to do with national pride or not giving terrorists the satisfaction. I have no desire to be a martyre. It's my opinion that this will only cause security to be heightened at airports although I will be keeping my eyes and ears open for the next 24 hours and am prepared to cancel at any time. Luckily, my ticket can be rescheduled if I chose to do so. Vacations should be fun and relaxing in my opinion.

Yes Vita: You are quite right. I fell a mixture of all.
1. Give them a lesson - sure hope I could.
2. Security - never will be better
3. Relaxing - tell the truth, no way you can relax under the circumstances, better in a different atmosphere.
What would I do? I'd go, I'd try to disconnect.
We had a similar situation 3 years ago with the floods in VZ. We were focused on the TV all day long, the events too horrible to believe. Whole families washed away in the mudslides and floods. Thought we'd go crazy, so we upped and left for a non-TV logding and tried to heal.

I think am going to wait a while before I get on another plane. Security? What a joke! If today proved anything it is this: If terrorists want to do some evil, they will find a way to do it. We cannot beegin to understand what goes on their heads. Rational minds cannot conceive of irrationality.

We are scheduled to leave to Italy in two weeks. I have every intention of going. This is a very good reason why I never travel internationally on a US carrier. However, I will be watching our response and the response of the rest of the world to that response and make my decisions from there. If it starts to go downhill I won't be taking off.

The latest news is that a truck filled with explosives was stopped in NJ. This may not be over. All of those who are being so cavalier about going on a vacation in the next few days should exercise some common sense.

If I were you, I would hold of on making a decision for the next 24-72 hours. At this stage, we don't even know who is responsible for these acts. I believe the real situation will become clearer in the next couple of days. I am booked to travel in 3 weeks, and even though not to the US or on American airlines, I feel a fear from this catastrophe, that hopefully will settle before that time comes. Right now, all is chaos and unreal.
