Shorts in Toledo Cathedral
Rick Steves (dare I mention his name here on this board?) usually offers outstanding advice. In the advice he gives regarding wearing shorts in the cathedral in Toledo (you may not), he's wrong and does a disservice to his readers by putting out that advice.

The tourist office told us the length of shorts is what makes the difference, that short shorts aren't welcome but knee length shorts are just fine. It was a very warm day in Toledo and wearing long pants would have been quite uncomfortable for me. Fortunately, a chap staying at the same hotel with us told me he wore shorts without incident the day before (I noted that he was traveling in shorts). I went back to the room and changed from long pants to short pants.

When we got to the cathedral, having validated our information at the tourist office, I observed that at least 20% to 25% of those entering would have been turned away had shorts not been allowed.

David

Yes, David, you are correct about wearing Bermuda-type shorts in the Cathedral of Toledo.

In fact, I have worn long shorts in every church in Europe I have been to, with the exception of the Basilica of San Pietro in Rome--where the "clothing police" are absolutely ridiculous in their tenacity.

If I may, I would just mention that it is a matter of "respect" as to what one wears in any church or Holy Place. I'm sure your shorts were ok David. Some people do need guidance in this area however. The best way to evaluate the situation is to accept that although your visit to the cathedral may not be a religious experience for you personally - it is considered holy to those of that particular faith and of course as most of us who travel know, that respectable dress (this means taking your hats off inside gentlemen & no short-short anything ladies) is just the right thing to do sometimes.

Lily

It is muy frio in the Toledo Cathedral. I needed to defrost in the sun for awhile after leaving there. If you wear shorts bring your parka as well.

By the way, pay the extra in the shop across the street and go to the museum in the back of the cathedral. It is well worth it.
