Polo shirts will be acceptable. Solid color, blue or some conservative color.

If you are not rich and Italian you will not look rich and Italian, euroenvy.

But sticking to solid colors, slacks and shirts will work just fine.

Last summer in Sardinia, while meeting the Blairs, Sylvio Berlusconi was wearing a white long-sleeved shirt, with most of the buttons undone, and a bandanna. Since he is definitely a rich Italian on holiday, perhaps this is a look that you would like to copy?

If your upper arms are well-developed then rich or not, a short-sleeved shirt will look quite "cool" since money will be the last thing anyone looking at them will be focused on.

All over Europe I saw men with short sleeved shirts. In Italy( Rome, Milan) they were mostly linen.

we will wear what we like but it will NOT be a golf shirt..we have tons of them (free) from various groups in every color and pattern even orange..we do not worry about blending as so many posts have been about. ....Yes I agree about the solids but we need to get him a couple of shirts for touring outside (too old for teeshirts) Tondalaya that's exactly what I was wanting to know..Linen does sound cool.. pockets, no? squared off tail? worn out? in? believe it or not he has no short sleeved (non-golf) shirts other than tees and hawaiian..he is not the Alton Brown type either...... requot;a white long-sleeved shirt, with most of the buttons undone"... if he had a body like John the gardener in Desperate Housewives then yes I would!...thanks

If you have time to do a bit of shopping you might want to wait until you arrive in Italy a buy a few shirts. The mens clothing stores in Italy are fantastic.

My dear, it's banding not "blending", the latter sounds all too painful an ordeal to bear.

Short sleeves are always in vogue, every single designer's ready-to-wear collections feature t-shirts no matter what the season is. This summer polo shirts seem to be in vogue with the likes of Miu Miu, Dries Van Noten, Prada, Jil Sander, Dior Homme, et al!

Hedi Slimane injects obvious rock chic into his polo shirt's for Dior Homme with a tiny single guitar embroidered on to the shoulder, as well as a stonewash and signature "cuts" to the shoulders. Jil Sander has quite classic ones in lime greens and greys that have press-stud style fastening. Miu Miu features wonderfully fine quality Italian cotton in beige/yellow/orange stripes to give an afro-chic look. Dries Van Noten produced some smart-casual polo shirts which wouldn't look markedly out of place in the evening: black or navy or lilac backgrounds with a very fine raised pinstripe. Also, it's worth noting that most of these polo shirts (except Miu Miu) are made from very fine cotton, not the thick pique cotton one associates with a polo shirt. I won't even go into details on t-shirt, because it'll be the next season before I'm finished!
