In another thread you mentioned your husband having a mobility issue. Would it not be the primary criterion for choosing shoes?
Why aren't tennis shoes an option? Is it the fit, the looks? There are hiking shoes that span wide ranges. Some look like business shoes.

Meindl hiking boots. You can walk for tens of kilometers in those with no fear of foot pain or blisters. They are comfortable in both winter and summer. Should be worn with appropriate hiking socks. If you are wearing pants, it's not obvious that they are boots, if appearances concern you.
