Sheet music in Paris and Rome

I play in a chamber group and am always looking for new music for us to try. After fifteen years in the same group, it is becoming challenging. I have fond memories of rummaging through music stores in London on a trip ten years ago and I wonder whether anyone here has suggestions for similar experiences in Paris or Rome. Thanks in advance.

Nikki, don't know if you are looking for "new" music or just something new to you, but since I play the piano I'm also on the lookout for sheet music, especially attractive publications. If I don't like it when I get it home, I frame it. Found some - a lot - of interesting stuff at the flea market in Paris - Clingancourt.

There is a music store in Paris called Largetto. I do not remember the exact location. Sorry

Nikki, Rummaging through stores in far away places sounds like fun. However I saw a wonderful computer CD that prints thousands of different sheet music. You can find it online at Hammacher Schlemmer. It's a store like Sharper Image. Enjoy.

Thanks for the suggestions, they are all interesting, but mostly I need a store that specializes in classical sheet music. I will look into Largetto, maybe there's a listing in the phone book. <BR><BR>In an earlier thread somebody mentioned a music store near the Arts et Metiers metro, and I will look there, although it would be nice to have a name or address.<BR><BR>After fifteen years, our group has played almost everything I have been able to find that is written for our particular instruments, and many things written for other combinations of instruments that could be adapted for our use. It is unlikely I would be able to find something this specialized at the flea market, although it would certainly make my day.<BR><BR>Shanna, do you remember which market (or even better, which stands) at Clignancourt carried music? I do plan to spend time there.<BR><BR>

I will be in Paris at the end of the week looking at apartments for a long term stay starting next month, so I'll I'll ask about sheet music (something that would interest my mother as well). My hotel is right near a store that sells stringed instruments (violins, mostly), so they would probably know. Look for a post on Monday, the 13th. Or email me privately (this is a real address).<BR>BTilke

Thanks, BTilke, I would love to hear what you find out.<BR><BR>I have found one possibility, La Flute de Pan, at 49, 53 and 59 rue de Rome. They have a neat web site at www.flutedepan.fr.<BR>

Nikki, I'm sorry I don't. It was deep into the flea market. We had meandered quite a bit and finally found the really great old stuff instead of the junk. My recollection is that it was a place that had old instruments as well. I'm real bad with business and street names. Sorry. Have fun on your trip - I'm having fun just remembering.

Try Paul Beuscher Music Stores at 27 Blvd Beaumarchais 75004 in Paris near the Bastille. There are many stores on rue de Rome. I've purchased music at both places.

Tom, thanks for the tip. Did Paul Beuscher seem to have a large selection? <BR><BR>Well Shanna, I'll have to just meander myself then, but the flea market is so big I doubt I'll stumble on the same &quot;great old stuff&quot; that you did. Mostly I'll be looking for old pottery and kitchen stuff there, and I do have some leads for those things.

Ah, Nikki - I envy you. Thinking of Paris the first time when I was a mere 23 years old and had a great time at the flea market. I'd never been to one and couldn't believe all the intersting items (bought an old handmade cotton shift which I still have 32 years later). I had met an American couple, Harry and Diane from Baltimore, who took me under their wing and we stopped for great bread and cheese and wine at a restaurant near the flea market. Everything I saw and did on that first trip was wreathed in fairy dust - utterly magical. Thanks for the question - and bringing it all back to me.

Mike, thanks, I will definitely be checking out stores on the rue de Rome, and I believe rue de Madrid is right around the corner. <BR><BR>Shanna, glad I could send you down memory lane, now you've sent me there myself. Thirty-one years ago, the year after you went, I was in Paris with one of my college roommates and another friend. We shared a room in the cheapest hotel we could find, the hallways were alleys and there was laundry hanging between the rooms. I have the pictures to prove it. A girl from across the alley came to our room to take a shower and the landlady put the shower on her bill. My roommate and I still laugh about it.

I just found this thread while searching for classical, and maybe it's too late now but I do have a few places I buy sheet music in Paris that are good, but I play the piano so don't know how good their collections are in other areas.<BR><BR>Librairie Musicale, 68 bis rue Reaumur (I was the one who mentioned that as it is near Rambuteau, I guess)<BR>www.paul-beuscher.com/fr/librairie.html -- that may be the same one others mention, but I have their business card and they call the store Librairie Musicale)<BR><BR>Flute de Pan, 59 rue Rome<BR>www.flutedepan.fr<BR><BR>I just found a web site specifically for sheet music stores in Paris on a French portal, but I don't know what kind of music, instrument or quality of inventory any carries but the above:<BR><BR>http://www.curiositel.tm.fr/musique-...ales/paris.htm

Thanks Christina, it's not too late, I am going next month. It was your comment about the store near Arts et Metiers that I remembered, and I am glad to have the address, as we will be staying near there.
