A wonderful tip that I learned is to drink plain cranberry juice (I dilute it if it is too strong). Look for "Just Cranberry" or "All Cranberry" which is unsweetened and all natural. It helps you to stay hydrated and I find that it helps me with headaches after I wake up from my flight nap.

Thanks, LaClaire!

I totally love pure cranberry juice mixed with water. I definately should have hydrated myself more before my trip.

2 glasses of white wine with the first course
2 glasses of red with the entree
1 glass of red for after dinner (or port)

and that doesn't include my cocktail before dinner.

ilove- I'm having a big glass of it right now, as my cardio class starts in about 45 minutes and last week I nearly passed out.

The one problem with the plan? Last time I flew, I took a 2 liter bottle of cran and water and they had me open it to make sure it wasn't alcohol. How ghetto would that have been? 2 liters of Cape Codder?

ilovetotravel.
I am a person who is very guilty of going off on tangents that have nothing to do with the question asked, and I never remember anyone chiding me for it.
As long as a person is helpful or cheerful, you really should be thankful, there have been some monsters on these boards in the past who made people quit posting at all.
I see nothing wrong with anything suze said, and the truth is- this is a public message board, anyone can post a reply, regardless of who posted.
You will just have to adjust like the rest of us..it is not really too hard, almost everyone on Fodors is really very nice.

Ditto Maire & Scarlett.

West to east usually causes me more of a jetlag problem but for the first time ever I managed a couple hours sleep on the plane to London this month but it took 2 Benadryls because of a bad hay fever attack right before I boarded. Didn't get dehydrated, though - at least not enough to bother me. Good luck next time.

LMAO!! I thought you were drinking a big glass of Richard's wine (not Cran/Water)! I'm all for drinking on the plane, but wine before the gym is never a good idea! Talk about dehydrated!

This thread started out on the wrong foot, with the melodramatic title "severe hydration" and has gone downhill since then. Severe dehydration my arse. Your lips got dried out honey. Next time take care of them better.

If you want to lay out your 'woe is me' on this forum, fine, but your comments like "stick to the topic", as in "I started this thread, I get to decide who gets to say what is an appropriate response." Jawohl Herr Fuehrer.

Some of the best, most informative, not to mention some of the most humorous threads are those that wind their way around, veering left and right off topic.

Oh wait, you can ignore this reply, as it's off topic. Mea culpa.

I never claimed woe is me, and yes, I was dehydrated.

But since you claim to know how I felt, I will make no comment on your references and your sarcasm. It is a shame that you speak on a topic of which you don't know the whole story.

I simply asked the poster to not try and combine threads. And to be honest, none of the comments this person has ever given me has ever been helpful in the least and I just don't appreciate them. I choose not to argue with this person, or any of you on here, so think what you will.

I usually take a couple of bottles of SMART water with me. (Purchase this at Target) gatoraid would work too but I don't care for gatoraid. Both are full of electolytes and sodium to retain water which keeps you hydrated. I have some friends who had MGB surgery and because of the new size of their stomach can not drink large quantities of water or anything else for that matter and they are required to drink gatoraide and/or Smart water to avoid de-hydration, so I figured if this works for them it should work for me on long flights and guess what...it does !!! Wah La....

For my lips I apply carmax frequently throught out the trip and no more chapped lips.

One of my favorite brands of water is Smart water and I loooove carmax, but stopped using it because it has phenol in it, which can cause a rebound dry lip thing...which I totally suffered from when I was younger, the more I used carmax, the worst my lips felt when I didn't use it.

also use eyedrops and nasal spray to hydrate your eyes and sinus passages which dry out so badly on planes...and lip gloss or chaptstick good too...also body lotion on the rest of you...and take your own liter bottle of water with you on the plane and drink plenty..i like the one cup per hour rule..You'll really know if you're dehydrated if you don't need to visit the loo to deal with what you've drunk...If it's alcohol, then just drink an ounce of water for every ounce of alcohol...that will help to counteract the diuretic effect of the alcohol...
For the jetlag part of it, when at your destination, take a walk outside in the light..try to get on new eating and sleeping schedules as soon as possible..having said that, have something in your room if you wake up in the middle of the night starving..I usually kick into gear in about three days...I nap even tho many say not to...or just put my feet up...set your alarm the first couple of days so you don't get a full eight hours before midnight....I don't have that much trouble going home because I usually get home about home's bedtime...and within a few days I'm doing great..altho I feel like I'm eating six times a day instead of three..Patience above all else..It's a temporary condition...

Thank you, Caldremr!

I thought I was getting enough water since I found myself standing in line for the loo quite often.....

I think the recycled air is what bugs me as well......something about it just isn't totally right, ya know? I felt like my body gave a huge sigh when I was finally off of the plane and in the terminal.

If it is the recycled air that bothers you, you should try the Ionic Breeze Personal Air Purifier from Sharper Image.

Have you tried the air purifier? Did it work well?

I am not sure how a person air purifier would work. And would I get odd looks from other passengers????

I do think the air was a definate problem on the way home.
