I am wanting opinions on what YOU loved in Saltzburg. I would appreciate it if contributors could give reasons why they offer their particular suggestions. I have an open mind but would like to avoid food and wine suggestions. Thanks for all the help I know will pour in. I will be in Saltzburg in April.

I would go to the old town and visit it and the fortress. If you are arriving by train, then I would take the bus to just across the river and then walk from there. Returning to the station, I would walk via Mirabell Palace if I had the time and energy, otherwise I would take the bus back.

We rented bikes, right by a main bridge into the "old town" area, and took a ride along the river--lovely path for riding, nice views and helped work off the coffee and pastries from an outdoor cafe.

I enjoyed wandering around old town, the shop windows were beautifully decorated. I was there mid-April and my recollection is that it was a very tourist-friendly area without being too "touristy", if that makes any sense. As far as what I missed...I wish I had gotten up to the fortress and would have liked to have done a Mozart concert in Mozart's hometown.

We took the elevator to the top of the Monschburg to enjoy the views of the town, wander in the park and stop Cafe Winkler for coffee.

The fortress I think is a must. From where does the furnicular?? run.

Petersfriedhof (St. Peter's Cemetery) at Stift St. Peter (or Peterskirche, or St. Peter's Abbey), right at the foot of the foot of the Monschberg.

My favourite "final resting place" on Earth to visit; so very serene, and beautiful. Each time we go to Salzburg my wife plans a morning on her own. She doesn't have to, but it seems she doesn't quite enjoy strolling around this small cemetery for 2-3 hours at a time, repeatedly, like I do.

Hohensalzburg, the Fortress, is fantastic as well. Take the tour enjoy the views over Salzburg.

If you are flying in/out of Salzburg airport and even if you aren't - consider the Red Bull Hanger 7 museum located close to the airport. It's not a museum about Red Bull, it's a hanger for the Red Bull aircraft as well as some of their Formula One Cars.
The name "Hanger 7" is a misnomer, it's not really an aircraft hanger but is an interesting architectural structure of domes. Think high tech sort of visionary, not at all like either an airport hanger or a traditional museum. The building is close to the airport although we took a public bus from the city center. There is also a restaurant. Admission is free, something that isn't too common in either Austria or Germany. We really enjoyed it, if you like aircraft museums/history and or Formula 1 you can easily spend a few hours here without going into the restaurant.
