SEND PHOTOCOPY OF ID and CREDIT CARD for hotel booking??

I never leave my ID at the hotel desk in Italy for more than a very short time, if the desk staff is swamped. Usually hotels photocopy my ID or write down the details as I stand there. Wherever possible, I use my Italian national identity card instead of my passport as ID.
