Self-guided walking tours/Paris

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good book on these walks in Paris?

There are a number of such books - - and I'll leave it to someone else to tell you one off the top of his or her head. You could probably also locate on www.amazon.com fairly easily.

But here's a collection of little gems in the grab-bag of Paris discoveries - - all worth reading:

Dispatches From Paris by Taras Grescoe

In the March print edition Taras Grescoe, a frequent TRAVELER contributor, writes a feature that reveals “22 Great Hotels for $100 or Less.” Online he offers daily field reports that chronicle activities for Paris travelers on a budget.

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/tr...103/index.html

Highly recommended. Were these here (online) last month when the magazine fitst hit newstands and mailboxes (of those of us who subscribe)? Or do they only come online the month later, when the issue goes into "archive"? I'm not sure - - what a bonus to the magazine that I never knew anything about!

Best wishes,

Rex
Whoops - - also meant to mention this little assortment of Paris goodies also - - this comes from the "Traveler" part of the NY Times MAGAZINE - - and I think that these stay up and accessible throughout a month-long period - - as opposed to article in the Travel section of the Sunday paper, which disappear every Friday night to make way for the new week. Admittely, this has even less to do with "walks" in Paris - - but still some good and useful stuff.

Anyhow, here it is: http://www.nytimes.com/library/magaz...tra-paris.html
Suzanne,
Pariswalks by Alison Landes is sort of a classic of its kind. It was published about 10 years ago but is still a valuable guide. Fodor's has a guide Exploring Paris published in 1993 which has a series of walks listed as well as a wealth of information about Paris. A really interesting book that deals with the streets, alleys and neighborhoods of Paris is Blake Ehrlich's Paris on the Seine. Ehrlich's book is not a guide per se but a history of many of the neighborhoods, streets, buildings and monuments of Paris presented in a logical way conducive to self-guided touring. Long out of print, you may find it at your library or available at one of the used book websites such as a libris. To me, Ehrlich's book proved the most valuable and interesting.

A great walking guide that folds up easily is Jeanne Olerich'Paris
Walking Guide. It was our family's bible-easy to use, great suggestions (including thr best ice cream spots) and incudes the Louvre. You can order it from amazon.com or call 800-888-4741.

Years ago the Paris Tourist Office in New York provided a bunch of walking tours of the city put out by AT&T. Alas, they are no longer. But you can get nine walking tour maps that will lead you through different parts of the city from the Musee Carnavalet in Paris or on the internet from Media Cartes at: http://www.media-cartes.fr Scroll to the bottom and click on "English," then scroll to the bottom again. You'll have your choice of three topics, each with three tours. They're just a couple of dollars each. For more Paris information e-mail me - [email protected]
