Seeking quality, and Affordability in London

My daughter and I are planning a trip to London. We're on a tight budget this time saving everywhere we can. We've got the travel figured out, but it seems lodging is impossible to find. Does anybody have any personal experience with London hotels? Our first priority is comfort and then money. Please Help.

London is expensive, even for modest hotels - no different than San Francisco or New york. Spend some time working backward thru this forum - there have been a number of discussions of London hotels, with lots of interesting stuff posted.
I would also suggest you look at the British Tourist website - I don't remember the exact name, but I think if you enter Bed & Breakfasts England it will get you there. There are a whole bunch of B&B's listed in the service and there may be a second B&B site just for London. Every district in England has a tourist guide - published by the public tourism agency. They list all manner of accomodations with a couple of different ratings formulas. I haven't seen the one for London, but the ones for Salisbury and Stratford were very helpful. The Salisbury website is www.net2000.co.uk/salisbury/ - perhaps you can link from there to a similar resource for London. Their email is [email protected] - and that might help.
Also, look for an apartment - then you can cook and save money that way. We are renting one in the Morgan Hotel, near the British Museum - but there are others.
Happy travels

We stayed at the Travel Inn Capital in London. The one we stayed at just opened in February 1998 and it was on Belvedre Road which is in front of County Hall. It is on the south bank of the Thames directly across from Parliament and Big Ben.It was very comfortable, safe and easy access to both Waterloo traon/underground or Westminster underground station. It was 49 pounds for a room for two or a family room for four. However, I believe it was increaing to 55 pounds at the end of June. They have a web page. Try searching on travelinn.

Hi, In planning my upcoming trip to the UK I found that a web site called Smooth Hound Systems (www.s-h-systems.com) was amazingly useful. They offered more precise info per accomodation than any other site I tried, and they have a free booking service, sometimes offering a discount for using them. When I hit a snag or two I e-mailed directly to the Smooth Hound address, and was promptly helped by a real person there (I began to feel he was a personal friend). I was lucky enough to find a flat to rent in London through a personal contact, so I didn't need S.H.'s help there, but they were fabulous for my non-London week. Good luck.
Jessica,
You should check out the following internet resources:

British resources on the internet.

www.bta.org.uk This British Tourism Authority web site is filled with information on destinations, lodging options, events and activities. It also features interactive maps and special online offers.

www.great-britain.org/gbi. Tourism information on destinations around the U.K.

www.s-h-systems.co.uk/shs.html. The Smooth Hound Agency has a wealth of information on more than 5,000 bed-and-breakfasts, guest houses and hotels throughout Britain. Many sites include photos and maps. Some have online fax-back numbers or email addresses to save you a bundle in long distance charges.

http://beduk.com The web site for B&B My Guest lodging reservation agency.
