Going to Paris for the 1st time on the 23rd for 5 days and i'm still looking for an hotel. Right now there are a number of sites i'm looking at that have hotels in my price range but reading tripadvisor on these hotels i get mixed reviews. Right now it's not about hotels but more about location. I'm not too hard to please so I'll do a Motel 6 over a Hilton anyday if it saves me $1.

I'm looking for a location where it's not too far from everything. A location where I can walk to things, go to the supermarkets, cafe's, bakeries, close to public transportation from the airport and in a safe part of town.

This one's got a twin room for 93Euro - I'm not clear if you need a single or a double...A room with A/C (Prestige) will cost about 15 Euro more, and breakfast is 6E.

I prefer the 6 eme, though hotels in that area tend to be a bit more expensive. 5 and 7 eme are cheaper and many Fodorites recommend them.

North Americans prefer the 4th, 5th, 6th 7th.
Europeans prefer the 2nd, 9th, 10th, 11th.
Budget tourists prefer the 12th, 13th, 18th, 19th, 20th.

try the hotel de la herse d'or, it's cheap but really correct, in the Marais near the Place de la Bastille, so it's central. do not worry, Paris is a really small town, and they developped a bike system, Velib, so you can hire a bike from 1€ a day!!
And, do not worry, Paris ios a really safe town, in every part of it

Don't get their hopes up about the bicycles. If they don't have a chip card, they can't rent a bike.

Having nothing else to do this AM (waiting for electrician), I went to Laterooms. You're a budgeter I take it. I saw this Residence Monceau Etoile. It received fairly good reviews; has a small kitchen area for keeping those costs down. It said that the small studio apartment was $122 (give or take). Anyway, I enjoyed my stay in the 17th. When my lottery ticket hits, I look to purchase my pied-a-terre there!
I have been to Paris before and am now in the mood to spread out my stays there to other areas. Usually I would recommend a 1st timer to stay in the 1st through 7th.
Shame about the bikes being available only a chip card...I was hoping it was just a coin (like the shopping carts).

This European (and Catherine Deneuve) prefers the 7th. Eiffel Tower around the corner and all the things you need. However, as it's your first time, I would just say pick anywhere on the Left Bank. On the next visit you can stay on the Right Bank. Or... if you really want central, try this:

Anyway, venusfan, the Accor group owns Motel 6, and if you find that chain suitable, you will want to stay at the Etap Hotel owned by Accor on avenue Jean Jaurès in the 19th. 55€ for a double and 5€ p/p for unlimited buffet continental breakfast. Very nice neighborhood near the Buttes Chaumont and the Parc de la Villette, as well as the Canal Saint Martin.
