AA frequent Flyer,
You're absolutely right--I shouldn't complain and just be happy I can go.
WOW--you guys come up with such great ideas. I will also check out AA and Continental.
Good luck, hopingtotravel. Let us know what you finally decide.

The Chicago-Paris N/S are 8 hours 15 min. according to AA. Slower coming back, as always the case, due to winds.
Unfortunately, the only N/S AS runs ANC-ORD is a red-eye, so you'd have a long layover in Chicago before the PM flight to Paris. You can leave earlier, of course, but then have to connect somewhere on the east coast, so what's the point?
The shortest overall duration ANC-CDG appears to be via American (operated by AS) through Chicago; next best (a couple hours longer overall) is NW/KL via Minneapolis and Amsterdam. All the routings through Seattle (and therefore Vancouver or any other multi-stop choices) would be way slower. And the really good news about the American choice from O'hare is that (this year at least) it's on a 767 with lots more leg room than the other carriers.

The only non-stop flights from Vancouver YVR to Europe that I'm aware of are to Amsterdam, Frankfurt or London.
Earlier in this thread, Gardyloo implied that all KLM flights from SFO are on 747s. That's true during peak summer service; other times you will be on an MD11.

AA41 arrives arrives at ORD from CDG at 4:45pm. AS has a flight (AA codeshare) ORD-ANC at 6:00pm. Tight, but possible. But again, a lot of these schedules depend on the season, and it may be different next year.

I've gone to paris twice from Seattle, once on United and once on NW/KLM.
United: advantage is that you can fly without change of plane Seattle/Chicago/Paris. My return was also no equipment change Paris/St.Louis/Seattle. We did disembark for customs in St. Louis.
NW/KLM: this was the itinerary that you describe. Flying through Amsterdam and changing. It took an extra couple hours. Amsterdam airport (Schipol?) was very nice. LOTS OF SECURITY CHECKS. Overall doable if the FF miles matter to you. Food and service on KLM from amsterdam to Paris Outstanding!
Bon Voyage no matter what you choose.

hopingtotravel: Sympathies from a fellow Last Frontiersman on the challenges of traveling from AK.
We always have trouble making it all in one day, so end up overnighting in Seattle. In case you didn't know...the Wyndham Hotel at SeaTac offers Alaskan residents a $65.00 special (must show ID). Literally 5 min from airport, rooms are great, free shuttle service and a fantastic 24/7 restaurant next door called 13 Coins. (don't eat at the hotel-it can't compare)
Our last trip we flew Alaska Airlines Seattle-Boston, getting the FFM, and then Icelandair to Paris. Though it required a plane change in Iceland, it wasn't bad and the price was right ($239) Boston-Paris.
Bon Voyage!
