Wow - I never gave screen resolution a second thought when I started throwing together my website. I've tried to keep it simple without frames and all the fancy gizmos but I may have been somewhat screwed up all this time and not even realize it. Would one of you website developers mind checking mine out and letting me know if I should change something? I would appreciate your time...seriously... Ben (http://www.bensbauernhof.com)

At home my settings are 1024 & 768 on my 4 year old laptop. However at work I run 800 x 600 on my new Dell PC. The medical billing software I work on requires that resolution if you want to see something bigger than 4x4. It is irritating to go onto the web and have to use the bar at the bottom to see the whole screen.

"I don't agree about Lynx - it isn't really necessary to cripple a web site to make it accessible to a vanishingly small percentage of users."
It's not about making it available to all those Lynx users. It's a test of accessibility, particularly for people using things like screen-readers. (Don't forget that disability discrimination laws about equal access often apply to websites just as they do to commercial premises.)
Far more important than worrying about which OS visitors are using is which browser. I've got a very non-geek-oriented website, and I get one Firefox visitor for every three using IE6.

Today webmasters need not distinguish between Internet Explorer and Firefox when designing their sites. Both browsers adhere closely to HTML standards, so if a site uses pages that also meet HTML standards, both browsers will display the pages more or less identically.
The days of having to know which browser a person is using are largely gone, thankfully. Unless you are using something non-standard that is specific to a certain browser or browsers, there's no reason to care which browser is being used.
Lynx is an excellent browser for testing accessibility. If you can still use and navigate around a site with Lynx, you can assume that there aren't any serious problems with accessibility.

rkkwan, sorry, you are correct, I misread your reply and assumed it was an implication, which it wasn't.
Besides, if you wish to sell to the poor, ignorant etc, then you would presumabluy dispense with the webpage, and just Spam them all ?

"IE and Firefox both follow standards extraordinarily well. You can prepare pages in standard HTML without worrying about which browser is used."
Sure. Just avoid anything newfangled, like CSS, and you'll be fine.

LOL owain!!
We always test on multiple browsers, OS, resolutions (though monitor size doesn't really matter). And then we list in a FAQ what we support... IMO, there are still distinct differences between IE and Firefox unless you're using anything <i>but</i> basic HTML...
(And also IMHO, anyone "doing some work on a web site" should know all about these things and more, such as web-safe colors and accessibility. Even without taking a class, there are many good reference books on the subject. If it's a matter of employment, I wouldn't hire someone who doesn't know the basics.)

Just throwing in my $0.02:
My 65 year old father, who is deaf, has been relying on the Web for news, entertainment, socialization, medical information, etc., since about 1992.
Please keep him, his three-year-old Mac, and his rural Iowa dialup connection (no choice yet) in mind.
Thanks.

janisj - without a doubt, this post isn't very travel related and we all should be ashamed for sharing outside interests here. But at the least, it allowed for the opportunity for you to add to the vivid mental image I've collected from your posts. So here's my opportunity to say thanks for that.

What have I caused?
I guess there's no such thing as a simple answer to a simple question.
But that's good. Maybe it wasn't such a simple question so the not-so-simple responses are valid.
Thanks. Keep 'em coming.
