Sheila,
I was afraid it would be too much. Would you or other folks be able to help map out something that would be enjoyable ? Which part of the journey I mentioned was too much ? Just trying to get a feel for distances. On the map it looks feasible - but perhaps not realistic or relaxing ...

Even at this late stage it is worth trying the Apartment By Castle in Edinburgh. website www.abc-edinburgh.co.uk It is located beside Edinburgh Castle which is an ideal position at anytime of the year and more especially during Festival time. There is a lounge, double bedroom and a twin bedded room and it can easily sleep up to four people. You can walk to all the attractions and historic places and there is no need to hire a car so that saves money and travelling time.
At Festival time Edinburgh can be expensive but if this accommodation is available it is well worth it.
If going to Skye I would suggest either the Urquhart Caledonian Hotel on Wentworth Street, Portree or the more expensive Cuillin Hills Hotel Portree. website www.cuillinhills-hotel-skye.co.uk As Portree is in the centre of the Island it enables you to travel throughout the island easily however a hired car is essential. Be prepared for the single track roads.
Look at the website www.tripadvisor.com and check out the independent reviews about these accomodations.

I forgot to mention previously that as you are looking for travel suggestions then you may wish to consider on the day you depart Edinburgh of hiring a car from Edinburgh Airport. This would ensure that you do not get caught up / delayed trying to drive through and out of Edinburgh in Festival traffic.
Take A8 / M9 and the A8000 to the Forth Rail bridge and then turn off and you can visit the likes of Blackness Castle Hopetoun House and then onto Linlithgow Palace before travelling onto Stirling. There you have numerous choices of places to visit to include Stirling Castle, Argyll's Lodgings, Holy Rude Church, the Wallace Monument and the Heritage Centre at Bannockburn. Stay overnight in Dunblane / Doune Stirling. This would enable you to see the places you may have missed the previous day and may also include Doune Castle. Spend the second night in the same area or the same accommodation and then you can either have a day driving round Loch Lomond and The Trossachs before making your way through Balloch and if you want you can always take a boat trip on Loch Lomond. When you leave take the A82 towards Glasgow and then take the Erskine Bridge over the river Clyde. Depending on where you intend staying that night travel on the M77 or the A737 into Ayshire.
The day driving will be a reasonably long day but you will at least see Loch Lomond and the beautiful Trossachs area.

Oben is a great base for a few trips that can be done in a day, and it is a really lovely harbour town. They have the best fish and chips that I have ever tasted. Use the ferry website for an idea of locations and towns if you start looking inio it has links off to many Towns, and with some little maps to give you and idea. I have also added the website for Oben.
