Edinburgh, Scotland Accommodation

Hi - Can anyone give me details of reasonably priced accommodation in Edinburgh. There are 3 of us and we want to be in a "central" area and are not worried about noise. A B&B would be fine. Hope someone has some info. Thanks

What do you consider 'reasonable'? We just got home from a trip to Scotland earlier this week. In Edinburgh, we stayed at the Castle View Guest House. There were three of us -- two adults and an 11-year-old. The cost per night for B&B was 100 GBP. The room was a little cozy; we were constantly stepping over our suitcases. It is four floors up, with no elevator, but that wasn't much of an issue for us. But the decor was nice and fresh. Derek and Coranne were very helpful, and breakfasts were great. There was no issue with noise, other than some baby seagulls on the roof outside. The best part was the location: one block off Princes Street in New Town, an easy walk to everything we wanted to see. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Hi Ms_Go and other -

I have enjoyed reading all your travel logs on this thread and others and have used several of the suggestions for my family. We too are three. We will be staying in Uig Hotel in their family room while on Skye.

I am having an impossible time finding a place in Edinburgh and in Fort Williams. After many phone calls and email I have come up empty. We are leaving for our trip in just over a week and we will be in Scotland in August.

Does anyone have any suggestions?????

PLEASE

Chloe,

Sorry, I can't help you with Fort William. We only drove through it on our way from Skye to Oban. It was a fairly good sized town, and like many others we went through, it seemed like virtually every house had a B&B sign out front. I did note that I thought the area just south of the center, as you are starting to head south on A82 (along Loch Linnhe) looked nice.

As far as Edinburgh, I expect it is pretty full in August with the festivals. We checked out various B&Bs in the £100 range for three (Lynedoch Place, Ailsa Craig Guest House, Six Mary's Place, for a few). We picked Castle View because of the location. I know we looked at a lot of sites for ideas. I'll see if I can find any that we bookmarked and come back and post them later -- they'd be on the other computer, and you know how that goes...

Have you considered staying outside Edinburgh and taking the train in? Not ideal, but perhaps an option if you are there during the festivals. The schedules seem to be pretty frequent. We thought Linlithgow was a nice little town, and it is only a few stops outside of Edinburgh (probably 20 minute train ride).

BTW, this picture of Uig Harbor is the view from our room at the Uig Hotel:

Good luck!

Chole,
Not sure if this will help or not, but we ended up renting an apartment for August. We had a very hard time booking, and that was like 5 months ago. We are staying at Canon Apartments, which is off Princes Street. Of course, can not totally recommend how it is, as we have not yet gone...24 days and counting!!

Thank you for your reply all!

Ms_Go - what a wonderful photo - just increased the excitement for our trip!

I'm wondering from your replies - is Fort William a nice place to stay? Would we be better off staying in a smaller, nicer town nearby?

I saw that you (Ms_Go) stayed at Kilchrenan House outside of Oban. How far a drive is that from Fort Williams? We are planning on taking a walk/hike in the area at Ben Nevis and we are planning on the steam train (round trip) at Fort Williams.

I will continue the hunt for a place for our stay in Edinburgh. I'd of course like to find a place in the town. This will be the end of our 16 day vacation and it would just be so much easier. Should any other ideas pop up, please do let me know.

I just love this site. Reading all the messages and being able to write to you and get advice back - it's great! Thank you.

I liked Oban a lot, but IMO it is too far away to be a base for the things around Fort William. I don't recall the length of drive exactly, but it's over an hour. Oban is a better stepping off point for Mull/Iona, Kilmartin Glen, etc.

You may have looked at these, but here are some of the resources we used:

Hi- you might have luck finding lodging throught the website www.festivalbeds.co.uk They book rooms in private homes during the month of August, during their very busy festival season. We have rooms booked through them for the end of August, and they have been VERY helpful. Give them a try.
