Scotland Itinerary suggestions
I am planning a Scottish holiday and have put together a rough itinerary. We like the outdoors and would plan to do several walks during the trip.We like good food, getting into the culture of the place and meeting the locals. We will pick up a car in Edinburgh and drop it off at Glasgow, if it isn't too expensive. I plan to fly out of Glasgow so it would be better if we didn't have to drive back to Edinburgh. We are trying to avoid too many overnight stays. We find it is better to stay 2 nights if possible.
The itinerary current looks like this
Edinburgh - 4 nights
Rannoch Moor - 2 nights - Visit Stirling Castle etc on the way/stay Rannoch Moor Hotel
Fort Augustus ? - 1 night - Not sure about where to stay or route
Glenelg - 1 night - Stay Glenelg Hotel
Skye - 2 nights - Ferry to Skye -Walking/a night at a good seafood restaurant
Glen Coe - 1 night - Walking/ stay ?
Loch Lomond - 1 night - ?
Glasgow - 2 nights - Drop off car/Fly out
I guess the grey areas of the itinerary is how to get from Skye to Glasgow. Should we spend time in the Trossachs instead? The other area I am not sure about is between Rannoch Moor and Glenelg.
I would be grateful for any ideas of how I could improve the itinerary. I know I will not seeing a lot of Scotland but we just want a leisurely trip.
Thanks

>>Rannoch Moor - 2 nights - Visit Stirling Castle etc on the way/stay Rannoch Moor Hotel <<
A reason why specifically? It is very remote and the drive to Ft Augistus would have you driving out of Rannoch Moor to the east then north and back west and probably 3.5-4 hours. I'd consider driving from Edinburgh to Glencoe and stay 2 nights (terrific walking), then Glen Elg, then Skye.
Yes, I would stay in the Trossachs - 2 nights if possible - easy drive from say Callander to GLA.

Thanks for your reply Janisj. The very reason I am staying at Rannoch Moor is because it is remote and there are good walks. After Edinburgh I thought a couple of nights in a quiet country setting would be good. I was planning to get there by using the A84/85 via the Trossachs and then A827.
I definitely want to visit Glencoe but thought that would be good to do on the return. I was thinking of taking the Armadale to Mallaig ferry from Skye then continuing along to Glencoe. Does that sound doable?

Haven't looked at a map ( janisj is very good at having a map of Scotland roads and all in her head...I'm not so much
) but I have stayed at the The Rannoch Moor Hotel several times and I love it. It's one of my favorite places anywhere. There are some great walks from the hotel.

If you like off the beaten track then you can't get 'more off' than Rannoch Moor... If you have chance also try and get to rannoch Station which must rank as one of the most isolated in Britain.
Glenelg is also different and off the usual tourist itinerary which makes it a good reason to go there! I assume you will be visiting the Glenelg Brochs

and using the Glen Elg ferry across to Skye?

ditto to what ESW says about Rannoch Moor- I just took the train thru it and that hotel by the station surrounded by such desolate but lovely moors- great choice.
Always wanted to go back and stay in that hotel!

BTW, the Rannoch Moor Hotel is about a 3 minute walk from the Rannoch Moor station. The moor isn't all that desolate. One of the walks near the hotel takes you through a lovely forest.
I haven't stayed in Glenelg but driven by and have definitely put it on my list of places I'd live to spend a night or two. As ESW mentioned have a look at the Glenelg Brochs just down the road. I have taken the Glenelg ferry and it's a short trip but very interesting. The drive to/ from the ferry on both sides of the Sound of Sleat ( Glenelg/Kylerhea ) is very scenic.

One small correction. The rail station is Rannoch Station not Rannoch Moor Station. South of Loch Rannoch is the Black Forest which is part of the ancient Caledonian Forest. Beautiful. It is quite a hike from the Rannoch Moor Hotel. The forest I mentioned in my prior post is not as large but still lovely and only about a quarter mile from hotel.
