I just want to reiterate - the little town of Fort William is not very impressive. I definitely would NOT recommend staying there. The attraction is the Inverlochy Castle nearby. Our stay at Inverlochy was very relaxing and low-key. We did lots of walking around the grounds and went on a great local hike. We had a picnic and rowed around the loch behind the castle. We played lots of backgammon in the living room and enjoyed amazing dinners in the lovely dining room. If that sounds like your kind of trip, then I highly recommend Inverlochy Castle!

Lots of trad music in Galway, and it's one of the youngest cities in Europe. A large pub called the Quays (pronounced keys) in town has music and sometimes Irish dancing. Great Southern on Eyre Square should be good for tea. Try for a walk along Galway Bay as well. Also there's a Claddagh shop with a small museum in town where of course they sell the traditional Claddagh rings and jewelry. I think you will find it a good trade for Limerick (I wanted to like Limerick, if only for the name).

Three girlfriends are doing the same trip but we have decided on three nights in each location and we rented a perfect apartment in Edinburgh city through flipkey. We have a kitchen and washer and dryer so will cut down on having to pack a lot. I found the timberbush day tour that sounds perfect as we aren't renting a vehicle. We want to see Rob Roy and Wm Wallace stuff and Sterling castle. Thinking about catching a city bus and doing the Rosslyn chapel. We are flying in and out of Dublin but doing a cheap flight into Edinburgh on Ryan air. Galway is lovely and three nights there will be during the Oyster Fest. The Gobus picks you up on the hour RT for 25 euro from Dublin airport to Galway city center. We have an early flight so the Clarion sounded like a no brainer, right there at the Airport but after we deposit our bags can take the city link bus into town for the last night. We did get a great hotel by Trinity college. I am getting older and Temple Bar area is getting loud for me. If you go to the cliffs see about the ferry boat ride that takes you up along the cliffs. Awesome view.

flpab~ thanks for all your advice. We are in the very early stages of planning. There is just so much to see, now we are wondering if we would have time to jog over to England for a bit. We will have 2 weeks in total. So much to figure out. Not sure about renting a car...I really want to, but not sure how stressful it might be to drive on opposite side of road and in a new place and all. Enjoy your trip! sounds like you have it all figured out...what month are you traveling?

we are going in Sept Shellyz, Galway Oyster fest. I am scared to drive on the wrong side of the road. I drive in Germany but not the UK. My husband will do it but not me and he is not coming this trip so am doing all public transportation which seems easy enough to do.
