Thanks to all of the great help I've had, I've been able to structure what I believe is a doable trip.

We will arrive in Edinburgh at 7 am on the first day and spend the night in Sterling. We will spend 2 days at Stirling before going to St Andrews to meet our granddaughter. After St Andrews we will spend our last two nights in Edinburgh.

Instead of flying to London, we will drive south, spend the night somewhere around 4 hours, then head to the Bath / Stonehenge area for 2 days before driving to London and leaving our car.

Now that I have our route and schedule lined up, are there historical places or Natural places on our drive that "shouldn't be missed." although I'm a beatles fan, I have little interest in anything beatles. What I do love is castles, history and beautiful landscapes!

Also, is there a route south from Edinburgh you would recommend over other routes?

What month will you be there? Weather matters. And how many nights on the road do you have?

My preferred route south is along the Northumberland coast and down to Durham and York. There's beautiful coast, impressive castles at Bamburgh and Alnwick, don't-miss cathedrals in Durham and York. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is the birthplace of Christianity in the north of England, and a very moving place.

4 hours south of Edinburgh is a long way from Bath.

Say you stop the night in Durham (about 3.5 hours) or York (more like 5 hours) - you would have about a 6 hour drive the next day.

If you go down the west side you could stop in the Lake District -- about 4 hours. And then straight south to Bath about 6 hours

Driving really doesn't make much sense since you have so little time. But Unfortunately, it is WAY too late to get discounted train tickets.

You don't have time to meander -- just go down the A1/M1 or the M6

as janisj says, you just got to hit the motorways.

Overnight, certainly want to be down to York by then. Thirsk maybe for a rural town.

Sterling refers to silver.

Stirling is the city in Scotland and the name of the eponymous castle.

Two nights in Edinburgh, flying to London. Stay in London two days then rent a car to drive around for two days returning the car on the third day to Heathrow.

The new plan makes much more sense.

You could fly either Glasgow or Edinburgh into Bristol and miss the double London, but generally a much better plan. Easyjet has flights roughly £65
