Thank you all for your plethera of information. I have been able to book some fantastic B&B's just outside Oban, on Mull and on Skye, the Dunvegan - west coast. And of course in Edinburgh before and after. So we are pretty much all set to go. we will get our ferrie pass when we arrive in Oban and the car is rented in Edinburgh. We plan to see Inveraray, Glencoe, Fort William, Mull and then do the ferrie tour of the isles. We will see as much of Skye as possible and then head back to Edinburgh and stop in Perth and a few other places. If anyone has any other information to pass along please feel free as I will check back often. Thank you Again!! Julie

"Don't make any plans for your holidays in 2008 to 2020, you'll just cancel them and come back to the highlands and islands.

I love this, Craigellachie! Since our first trip to Scotland in 1999 (a 2 week sightseeing overview), I have been yearning to get back to explore the Highlands and Islands. I've been to Scotland three more times (8 additional weeks), with my daughters' pipe bands, but we were based out of Glasgow and Stirling, and have had just a bit of free time for the Higlands and none for the Islands. He certainly did some of His best work in your country...

It sounds to me like you have the makings of a very nice trip, Julie. I really do look forward to your trip report!

One last thing: Your journey should take you within striking range of Kilmartin Glen. If you have the time and the inclination, you may want to check it out. We found it utterly fascinating. A lot of history and pre-history there!

Good luck, and enjoy.

Mr. Go - thank you. I have spent hours and hours researching for this trip and your help has been so appreciated, thank you. I was not able to get into the B&B you had suggested in Oban but found a fab place 10 miles north called Hawthorne Cottages out in the middle of nowhere and right on the water. Quiet, peaceful and beautiful. Here is our itinerary:Arr.Edinburgh May 16th - the 18th drive to Oban stopping on the way in sterling etc, then travel around the area including Inveraray, we have 4 days - then on to Mull the 22nd for two nights in Tobermory w/o car. We scheduled the Discover Mull tour on Wed. Thursday take the ferry ride around the isles and back to Oban. Friday drive north to Glencoe, Ft.Wm Neptunes Stairs and surrounding area. No B&B booked Friday as we may stay in Mallaig or go on to Armadale..?? Sat Drive the sleat coast up and over to Portree and on to Denvegan, west coast. Stay at Eabost Houst for 4 nights - see the west coast and surrounding area. Wed long drive back to Edinburgh. Thur/Fri tour the castle and Holyrood etc.. Sat home. I'm sure while we are in Oban we can make it south to Kilmartin too.

Can anyone tell me how long it Really takes to drive from Dunvegan to Edinburgh?? The map states 5 hours, I am thinking closer to 8hours and no I do not mind the drive. Thanks Again!! Julie

According to aaroadwatch, it'll take 6 hours and 41 minutes to get from Dunvegan to Edinburgh.Remember this does not allow for any stops, so 71/2-8 hours should be about right.

If you decide to stay in Armadale/Ardvasar, I recommend the Ardvasar Hotel. It has a good restaurant too.
