Traveling in early Sept 2016 to Scotland. We want to incorporate The Vatican any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Finally worked out that the USVI are the US Virgin Islands

now the question maybe does anyone fly directly to Rome from Edinburgh? Ryanair does and you can get a rough idea of flights from rome2rio website

I would fly. I don't think it matters which destination you visit first but I'd have my main flight be into one and out the other with another flight in between as others have suggested.

If the question is about flights then there is a BA partnership service from STT via PHL to Glasgow.

Take a low cost Jet 2 flight from Glasgow to Rome and then back from Rome to STT again through PHL.

OK -I'm confused. How long do you have for this trip?

Do you want to see nothing in Italy but the Vatican - or are there other things on your list there.

As for Scotland - what are you interested in their - just Edinburgh? Or do you want to do a trip through the highlands?

Are you flying hoe directly from Edinburgh or Glasgow?

Based on your overall plans/timing there may be other options that make sense?
