school holidays in france

DH and I are planning a trip to central and southern France in April. From research, we find that all school holidays are in April. We are planning to be there for a month. Since we are a bit older and will be driving a car, we have concerns about traffic and crowds. None of our plans are set in stone-but we want to start on some things soon. I have the exact dates for the school holidays and we would like some input regarding traffic and crowds. We plan to lease a car in Paris -driving to and from there. Since we live in rural central Colorado-we are not accustomed to heavy traffic. Oh, we plan to stay and be in rural areas once we get out of Paris.
If there are issues with the school holidays or traffic, alternative suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The only bad traffic days are the first and last days. There is no problem at any other time during the school holidays.

However, depending on where you are, there can sometimes be a (small) problem with the school holidays of the surrounding countries.

There are three geographical school "zones," each with its own spring holiday schedule. For the 2012-13 school year, the school Spring holidays are April 13-28 in Zone B, April 20-May 5 in Zone A, and April 27-May 12 in Zone C. So there's month-long period during which there are school holidays somewhere in the country.

You won't have any problem with traffic (kids can't drive and most parents are working). Trains are sometimes crowded with groups of kids, and some sightseeing attractions can be, but I doubt you'll ev en notice. And traffic will not be an issue.

Thank you Kurouc and St.Cirq. I did have the schedule for the zones-thanks to Google!! Kurouc, we can always count on you!!! What do you think of April vs May? I was in Paris, Loire Valley and St. Malo in April last year and the weather was beautiful. In May of 2010 we were in Paris and it was cold, damp and not enjoyable at all.

This year, April, May and September were considered to have the best weather in Paris, but it changes every year.

For example, January and February are considered to be the only months where you might expect a bit of snow, but all of the snow fell in December last year... again and again and again.

Well, Kerouac, I guess that it will be what it will be.
Maybe my expectations were too high in May!!! We did have a great sunny weekend just before leaving.
Thanks K.
