Schlob Neuschwanstein

What is the best way to visit Schlob Neuschwanstein in Germany? I am going to Germany from Amsterdam and taking trains with Eurail pass, stopping some cities. Any good idea?

you will find it be a breat SLOB.... really, do not try to be so phonetic,,it is Schloss...you saw the German double ss symbol and thought it was a b..... it is south of Munich.

The castle is southwest of Munich, near the town of Fußen. That is not Fuben! The German es-tset looks funny to us. Linderhof is near there , also and in some respects is a more pretty castle. Neuschwanstein looks more grandiose because of the spires. And I must admit some of the door carvings are incredible. I think one artisan worked his whole life just carving one set of double doors. A nice trip is to rent a car and drive so you can also visit a beautiful baroque church known as the Wieskirche. The church inthe meadow. Gorgeous inside.

There is a train line that runs south from Munich to Fussen, and most trains take about 2 hours to get there; some are direct, others require a change of train. From Fussen, a shuttle bus (costs a few Euros) connects with your train arrival and takes you to the start of the footpath up to Neuschwanstein in a matter of minutes. If you are overnighting in Munich, you can do Neuschwanstein, and maybe Hohenschwangau too, as a daytrip. You can use your railpass to get to Fussen, of course, but it is also possible to get a cheap daypass ticket for the local trains (the only ones that go to Fussen) - either 21 Euros on weekdays or 28 on Sat or Sun - and take up to 4 people with you for free. Ask about this deal if not using your pass.

While pressing the ALT key, type in the numbers using the number keypad at the side, not the numbers at the top of the keyboard, THEN let go of the ALT key. If it still doesn't work, try adding a "0" in front of the number.

As Liz described correctly, you do have to use the numbers on the numeric keypad, not those above QWERTY... But the table also shows that there are diferent results for Alt + xxx, compared to Alt + 0xxx.

well that is just dandy IF you have the extra number keys...however my laptop does not it has only the top row so I guess I am stuck with spelling it slob.

I also have a laptop. When you open word--go to help (or ?) at the top. In the dialog box, for your question, type -- international characters. On the right side of the screen you should get a list titled "Keyboard shortcuts for international characters".

Actually, Olaf, your laptop MAY have the equivalent of a numeric keypad, with a special extra key to activate it. The "numeric keypad numbers" typically share the keys YUI GHJK BNM (the numbers should be printed on the relevant keys if your laptop has this). A tiny bit clumsy (especially when you try mixing this in with regular typing), but it can be done. The one alternative on a laptop is to simply cut and paste the table I have listed above, and save it into an ordinary text file. Then when you need one of those characters, just cut and paste the individual character.

Te suggestion I gave above isn't really very good. Rather than "international characters" type in foreign language accents. That will get the list of international character keyboard shortcuts.

To Keyboard Challenged! I was trying to give the sign for the Euro, which was not on Rex's inventory. ? ? ? = ALT 0128 on my keyboard, but once again it looks as if Fodors are still living in the 20thC - or maybe they are on netscape or something that doesn't gel with Internet Explorer. I also noticed that ALT 0129 and ALT 0130 are missing from Rex's list, so I put them in for the sake of completeness. Harzer

See? What comes up on my screen as a capital E with a severely rounded back and twoorizontal lines through it is interpreted by Fodors as a question mark. There may be a message for us in this. Harzer
