Schilthorn peak and clothing
Going to Switzerland for short trip in September. Thinking of doing the Murren-Schiltorn excursion (around Sept 20). 'Flat land' historic temps avg. 50-65*F, which is light jacket weather. What should we expect at Schilthorn destination mid-Sept? Freezing? Windy? Would adding silk underwear, extra sweater under the jacket, hat/cap, gloves, long scarf take care of our comfort for the time we're up high? Or is this Floridian going to have to shop for a coat or heavy jacket?
Also, shoes? Planning to wear socks and 'sneaker' type shoes most of the time. Don't have hiking boots, need them? We aren't planning to do much hiking/ walking on paths.
Thanks!

You don't need hiking boots if you aren't going to be hiking down.
There is a much-photographed sign up there indicating "no high heels" (picture of a 4-inch spike heel pump with a red slash through it). But sneakers are fine.
For clothing, think layers---a windproof jacket with a warm fleece underneath. You'd need these for a trip to Switzerland in any case.
You might carry hat and gloves if you plan to be outside a long time. But there is a warm building up there too.

I have been to Schilthorn (and Jungfraujoch, Aiguille-du-Midi, Gornergrat, etc) in various seasons just for the rides and for hiking.
You are not doing hiking.
It all depends on the weather of the DAY when you will be doing that so you need to be flexible and decide once you are there but basically no hiking shoes and no heavy clothing needed in mid-September. If it's sunny and no wind, I might do it myself even with bermuda short (perhaps I should recommed you rather a pair of light trousers or jeans), t-shirt + light jacket and sneakers. If the weather is not that good, then light trousers, a light sweater/trainer in addition to above, something you can put in your bag if it becomes too warm. At the worst case, if it gets too cold for you, you can always go inside the rotating panorama café/restauant.
