Schengen Entry/Exit Scheme due October 6th this year
This article in the Guardian refers mainly to Eurostar and the like, but it applies at all entry points into Schengen.

Now fingerprints and photos are nothing new for visitors to the US, along with needing an ESTA, but it is new for Schengen and the first time you enter after the scheme starts will be a bit slower (a lot slower at UK ports I suspect), but after that you can use the e-entry points, for three years anyway.
ETIAS will be introduced at some point next year. You will need both.
Of course we have heard all this before and it has been delayed, but now they seem to have a fixed date for it.
