Scavi Tour Reservations for May 2011...Not too early to request
To those of you who are interested in taking a Scavi Tour to the Necropolis under the Basilica of St. Peter, I just received my ticket reservations.
I emailed the Scavi office on Jan 14, received a reply on Jan 15 with instructions for submitting payment. I sent a fax with credit card information on Jan 17. I received my confirmation and ticket receipt on Jan 19.
I was quite surprised that this happened so easily and quickly. I have read threads where people have not been able to secure tickets.
I guess the trick is to request tickets as soon as you have your airline tickets and lodging booked.
Looking forward to my return trip to Italy!!!!

Thank you for the information Leslie! I'll be there in May as well and just emailed yesterday. I have my fingers crossed that I get a quick response as I'll be needing to plan my itinerary around this tour!

I just booked for May 2011 as well. Not only was it quick and easy, but I was able to request a later time in the day than originally offered, and they were able to accommodate that as well.
There certainly are benefits to booking early

A suggestion for those of you who have not booked a Scavi tour...DO IT ! My preference would be to book a Scavi tour as late as possible in the afternoon, but arrive early in the morning to tour the Vatican museum, etc. (by noon, it will be jammed) The Scavi tours are very small (a dozen or so)so you won't be crowded as you enjoy that aspect of the Vatican.

When I first started researching the Scavi Tour, everything I read suggested contacting the office about a month to a month and a half out from the requested date. I am so glad that I jumped the gun. It leaves me free to plan the rest of my itinerary, ie cooking class, Borghese Gallery reservations, Vatican Mueseum Tour, and Colosseum/Forum/Paletine Hill tour. (The usual tourist things)
