I refer you to the master of this information, the late Ed of the web site twenj. Rome was one of his favorite destinations.

Please refer to this URL:

http://www.twenj.net/romevactican.htm#necropolis

Buon Viaggio,
BC

In addition, you can do a search. Just type "Scavi" into the Text Search box at the top of the page. Scroll down to "Italy" in the box to the right and press "Find." There's lots of info in the archives. The scavi are high on our list of the most interesting sites we've explored anywhere in Europe.

Hi btd! This is the other Mark.
I took the Scavi tour in May of this year. It's fascinating, and well worth the effort of getting reservations. You'll walk through excavations dozens of feet below the floor of St. Peters, viewing Roman and pre-Roman tombs and ruins. An incredible Rome/Vatican experience!
Buona fortuna!

Here's another website you can look at. I think it's the official Vatican site:

http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/in...cted/uffscavi/

Josh,

Try! Follow the instructions on twenj. You'll email the Scavi office; wait for their reply then have to send payment. You could ask for a tour date later in your stay in Rome, then go pay as soon as you arrive. Good luck.

We actually have the Scavi tour bookedfor Sept. 18th. I used the twenj site and had a reply 2 days later. Theyasked me to confirm and to please cancel if it was necessary. No money involved. I suppose you pay when you show up for the tour. I e-mailedthem about 1 month ago and also gave a choice of two days. I was really surprised at their promptness!! I would surely try immediately. Good luck

In regards to making a reservation you can also go to the Ufficio di Scavi when you are in Rome and make a reservation in person. Of course this means that you have the time to visit this are twice. I did this in June '01 with no problem.

To do this go to Swiss Guard post on the left of the steps of St. Peter's and let them know that you want to go to the Ufficio di Scavi. The office is a short walk past the gate on the right.

I had originally received an email stating that they were booked, but when I went to the office they had plenty of spots open.
