Sarlat Market - Wed or Sat?

Which market day is best in Sarlat, Wed or Sat? Perigueux markets are same days, so the other day will be spent in Perigueux.

If you are cooking and like fish, the Périgueux market is better on Wednesday when one of the best the fish vendors in the Dordogne is in front of the cathedral. He's not there on Saturday.

The Wednesday market in Sarlat is usually smaller than the Saturday market. Wednesday is a farmers' market, Saturday there are more vendors, plus lots of other non-food items - pottery, jewellery, underwear (!) copper, etc.

Depends when you will be there. Off season the Saturday market is fun, but in July/August can be almost un-navigable, there are so many people.

We tried to go there one Saturday in July (2004) and couldn't find parking for love or money! Never made it. In the summer, I would definitely go to the Wednesday market, not the Saturday, especially if I were driving in from elsewhere.

Thanks for advice. We will be there in June or Sept. Sounds like Sat would be best for variety of vendors.

Saturday is the big market, Wednesday the small. In June it will likely be very crowded (though not elbow-to-elbow the way it is in July and August); in September it should be fine. If you can't find parking (get there as early as you can and you'll be fine), go up the hill. There's a huge lot at the top.
