I definitely second staying somewhere with a restaurant or two within walking distance so that you are not worrying about who is driving home.

if it has a bakery, shop, bar, etc. so much the better. the 9 & 13 year olds will love going out in the morning to buy the croissants and pains au chocolat.

most websites with cottages for rent will let you select village/town location as one of your criteria.
