Thanks so much. That is one of the festivals I found in my google search. It's good to know that there are other good shows going on that same day. I'll keep looking for Rocio Molina ! I've watched a few of her youtube videos and it looks like a good show to see live!

Well, I found that there is a Sara Baras' Carmen at the Teatro Lope de Vega in Madrid during the time I'm there. A couple of questions: What are good seats for his type of show, does it matter if you're close or not? Is it better to experience a flamenco show in a more intimate setting?

Kim what a fantastic wealth of info you are! I too am a huge fan of Pastora Galvan (only from the web sadly) & I think Israel is a genius!

Fodorites you should make note of these very very helpful comments. Every single one of the artists Kimhe mentions is major.

And as far as getting Fodorites to better appreciate cante who better than La Macanita.

Kim you should contribute to my musica Española thread!

nysmom,
We were absolutely delighted with the amazing Sara Baras Carmen show last month! Please, please, please don't miss! She does a real tour de force. Not only is her dancing extraordinary and heartfelt, it's the whole spectacle-the dramatic lighting, the beautfiful costumes (all done in red and black), the super talented musicians (two cantaores, 4 guitars, drums), the stage settings, and her two male dancers are equally superb. You'll love this show-it may be the highlight of your trip. And you're lucky that the show has been held over for your dates.

What brought the house down at our performance was the moment she brought an adorable little 4-5 (?) year-old out to dance with her during the encore. She was quite the little flamenco artist, dancing a solo and then with the troupe. We all assumed it was her daughter, but I didn't even realize she had a daughter. amsdon, do you know?

We splurge for orchestra seats, third row, 50 euros each, because we wanted to be close to the action.
Bought our tickets here: http://tinyurl.com/dja7f4
We then picked them up at El Corte Inglés at the service desk the day before because we didn't want to stand in a long line at the theater box office.

amsdon,
Bad luck with María Pagés. She injured her ankle and had to cancel 5 of her performances, including ours, so we missed seeing her. And we missed Rocío Molina in Mujeres and Joaquín Cortés in Calé by just a day. Boo, hoo. But there's always a next time...

What ?!!! no Maria?Boohoo is right! And what's more no Rocio not even Joaquin?
I really wanted to hear from you re Maria Pages. I know Sara Baras is tremendous, in fact she seems so very consistent that it's almost super human. I did not know about a daughter I though she was wanting to start a family...(?)

BUMMER! I think you know the expression in spanish....

And here in California it appears the annual New World Flamenco festival organized by Yaelisa is canceled for this year due to the economic climate

Oh well Maribel looks like you will have to go back sooner than later.

I know, I know! You can imagine my disappointment when I went to the Teatro Español to pick up my María Pagés tix and saw the sign about the cancelation!

That's a real bummer too that the New World Flamenco was canceled!

Sara Baras is truly super human. That, amsdon, is a perfect description of her dancing skills.

Maybe someone can tell us who that adorable little 4-5 yr. old was....I just assumed it was her daughter, but through many google searches, I can't find anything about her having a daughter...Any way, she was really cute and sassy with her flamenco.

Won't be back until June 26. Hope to catch something good this summer, somewhere!

nysmom,

If you are in Madrid in late May I hope you would be able to see Rocío Molina in her own and latest performance, Oro viejo (Old gold), in the new Teatro del Canal on the 25th of May.

Spanish critics awarded Molina the prize as best female flamenco dancer for both 2007 and 2008 and for very good reason. She is something completely of her own, and - although she is deeply rooted in the tradition - she is arguably currently instigating a new era in female flamenco dance.

In the words of Silvia Calado, one of the most prominent critics (about Oro viejo during this year's festival in Jerez de la Frontera)

Molina "drove the crowd mad with that dance of hers bordering on recklessness. I couldn’t explain why it gives that sort of fear-amazement-dizziness-fascination-enjoyment. But what is absolutely certain is that we’re witnessing something big, really big. And it makes you feel like doing something so the whole world knows about it. And besides the fact that, to top it all off, her message remains and runs deep, the thing is that her way of dancing has references … on the other side of the galaxy. Dancing like this has never been seen before."
http://www.flamenco-world.com/magazi...8032009ing.htm

"Oro viejo" will be staged as the opening performance of the "Suma Flamenca" festival in Madrid on the 25th of May. Tickets and details will soon be available on www.sumaflamenca.com.

And as Maribel suggested, I would recommend one of the front rows (3 to 10 perhaps).

amsdon,
I would very much like to contribute to your música española thread!

Acually I would love to see all three Maribel's choices.
While they are all like different beautiful flowers I must
admit I would most love to see Rocio she simply oozes compas from every fiber of her being and is so very "un-flamenca" with that baby face at first but when she dances it's something else. But any of these would be worthwhile for sure.

Thanks everyone! I continue my search for where Rocio Molina will be on May 20th in Barcelona! She sounds great. I won't be in madrid on the 25th of may unfortunately since that show actually has a location!

This is a great website for Barcelona flamenco events.

I don't see her on there. Where did you hear that date?

I think the festival is "Ciutat Vella" in May 2009 Barcelona. But she is not listed. Maria Pages, is though.

The only place it's listed is on her website.

I think we'll have plenty of good options but if I can catch her in Barcelona, I want to try!

nysmom,
This is a mystery I just can't seem to solve. I've looked at the schedules of the major theaters, including the Liceu, and I can't find a performance of Mujeres coming up. I've tried emailing her dance studio (the contact email on her web page) in case someone there might know but haven't had a response. We'll all keep trying for you, so just bring this to the top from time to time.

Thanks for that Barceona flamenco link, lin!

I think this must have been cancelled and they haven't updated the webpage.

Hi lin,
That indeed just may be the reason we all can't find it on a Barcelona theater schedule.

Hello!

We are planning to be in Madrid/Barcelona from June 23 - July 1. Do you know about a flamenco star on tour in Madrid/Barcelona during these dates? I have searched the web, but did not find anything.

I will go to Casa Patas otherwise. During these days they have CONCHA JAREÑO/FRANCISCO HIDALGO or ANA FERNÁNDEZ/SERGIO ARANDA. I have never heard of these dancers before. Would you be able to recommend one over the other?

Thank you very much for your help!
Elana

elanamig,
I just checked the Madrid summer festival page, Los Veranos de la Villa, which runs from late June 25 through August 23 this year.

I don't see any flamenco stars listed for your dates (assuming you'll be in Madrid first, before moving on to Barcelona.
you can check here
www.esmadrid.com/veranosdelavilla/

Flamenco during this wonderful summer-long festival will include:

Diego el Cigala and Tomatito-July 25

El Cabrero and Rocío Márquez -Aug. 11

Farruco and Antonio Rey-Aug 12

Aurora Vargas and Luisa Palacio (cantaoras)-Aug. 13

Capullo de Jerez and Julián Estrada-Aug. 15

Carmen Linares and Guillermo Cano-Aug. 16

Flamenco de Hoy de Carlos Saura-Aug. 18-23

And finally for Sara Baras fans who happen to find themselves in Madrid in sultry August,
she'll be performing Juana la Loca from Aug. 17-19 in the Sabatini Gardens venue.
And darn it, I'll miss it!

Hi Elanamig,

I have been watching alot of Concha Jareño in you tube, she has won all sorts of flamenco dance prizes (Premio Mailde Coral & Premio Mario Maya)

1.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke28U...eature=related

2. Bio
https://www.flamenco-world.com/tiend...a-jareno/1667/

Here is her myspace site
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jZ_wVwLi60

She is an innovative flamenco dancer with an interest as well as some more avant garde work. In the Casa Patas venue you should expect perhaps a more casual look as far as costumes as opposed to working with her bata de cola (dresses with trains) she so expertly uses in theater work.

She appears to be an intelligent elegant dancer. To those expecting stereotypical emotional fireworks she may appear somewhat restrained. She shows clearly the influenced of one of her former teachers, Eva Yerbabuena in her style.

I like her very much. Yes go see her & reserve she looks busy & no dount it will be quickly sold out.

By the way the list Maribel posted has some incredible artists or also check the popular flamenco websites for the schedules.
