Well it appears that Farruquito will not be there just his family and "kin" includes La Farruca, La Faraona & his cousin Farruco (so confusing w/ so many Farrucos & "Farru" etc.)
I guess Farruquito has gone out on his own really as a solo artist (kind of like MJ!)
But we'll see...

Uf...hard one, but probably Pages....
But while at Autoretrato try to listen to see if you catch the buzz about the post concert happening place....now that is sure to be good. You know how people get wound up after a concert. Maybe they will go to Moreria of one of the smaller clubs after?
How long is Autoretrato playing is it more than one night? I haven't had a chance to check.

Ok LOl I am so sorry to Hijack....Maribel & Lol here is my report on the Farrucos @ UCLA this last wednesday.
All in all it was very good & I enjoyed it, but remember that this is what I call "concert version gypsy" and cannot be compared to the full length Spanish dance concerts for example the Ballet Nacional. But neither was it a true improvised juerga on stage. The show was in fact very tightly rehearsed, even though that is contrary to the concept of anything authentically gypsy. Even the opener's premise was that of a supposedly "unexpected shoe malfunction" for Furru (as if!).
The show starred the young Farruco aka Farru, who is the 24 yr old grandson of the late Farruco, and cousin of the now famous Farruquito (Farruquito, who did not perform this time inherited the flamenco dynasty after the death of the elder Farruco in 1997 but he younger Farru was handed the reigns when Farruquito was sent to prison for the hit & run accident Maribel's refers to. When he was released, the already popular Farruquito was catapulted to celebrity status.) Sheeesh! I know I know hard to follow.
The show also featured Farru's cousin Barullo who is about 20. Age explains alot & therefore forgives in part some of the overly self indulgent posturing and loooong numbers. Hey and I'm a fan don't get me wrong. But a newbie would find it tiresome. It was evident from the squeals & screams that now accompanied the "oles" and "alas" in the audience that these two now hold their own as pop/flamenco idols. Despite the constant flinging & smoothing of long, gelled shoulder length hair, they are very masculine types they have a definite sex appeal. I wondered aloud if Farru had a "sex appeal coach?"
I cannot say that I was too impressed with Barullo (yet) but Farruco was a gifted dancer with good (gypsy)technique, style and duende.
Also in the show were the two "moms" the daughters of the original patriarch, La Farruca (mother of Farru) and La Faraona (mother of Barullo) Farruca danced a solo and joined the boys at the end. But the concert was definitely male focused, as expected.
The best part of the concert for me was the fact that they had FOUR fantastic singers and two wonderful guitarists.
Unfortunately the trend to have extra dark lighting these days makes it difficult to see anything. And the styles in fashion are really all about spiffed up dudes and low key women..
I would recommend it, yes, especially at 50% off price.
I had to depend on the youtube videos to keep me clear on who is who becasue they have so many nicknames http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jsw6K...eature=related

Hi amsdon,
Thanks so much for your review and glad you were able to get that half price discount! Hard to keep up with the convoluted travails of the Farruco family! I think Farruquito was given a provisional release from jail in Jan. after serving 2/3 of his term, but he's required to wear a monitor. That explains why he wasn't part of this show.
Wish they would have made it here to Seattle on their US tour. But no one does. The flamenco greats go to LA or San Francisco and skip us!
Well, we did get Nacho Duato and his Compañía Nacional de Danza last winter, so I shouldn't complain. And I'll get my flamenco fix later on this month! Yipee!

We haven't decided because our trip now needs a major revision. We've been invited by the Tourist Office on a 4 night fam trip to the Fallas in Valencia so we're busy trying to rearrange our itinerary to make it fit. I'll go to great lengths for a free 4 night stay, especially to Valencia for Fallas!
Luckily it doesn't affect our late March stay in Madrid. So with the money saved, maybe we could just go to both!

Ana María,
Hubby has decided that we see María Pagés and her Autorretrato show on Fri. March 27. Good decision (smart man) since that night is the National Theater Night, which means that one can get a 25% discount on all theater tickets!! More euros saved, yipee! We'll leave Sat. up for grabs. Then Sun. night it's Sara Baras.
This spring has turned out to be a terrific time to see top flamenco performers in Madrid.
Eva Yerbabuena is performing at the Teatro Español until this Sunday.
For dance lovers, the schedule is now up for Madrid en Danza, '09, from April 13-May 3-

I'll be in Spain for a couple of weeks and was looking into catching a flamenco performance. I looked at Rocio Molina's webpage which says she'll be performing on May 20th in Barcelona but it doesn't say where. Can anyone help me out on this?
Thanks!

nysmom,
The Liceu might be the venue for this year's Mujeres performance. I've checked the May calendar, and the dance performances aren't up yet, but you can check later here-
www.liceubarcelona.com
The 3 dancers, Merche Esmeralda, Belén Maya and Rocio Molina, danced in Mujeres at the Festival Grec in Barcelona last year, so I'd think they would perform it at another venue this spring. Amsdon will surely know.
Amsdon,
About Farruquito...he is indeed off on this own, because I see he's danced in his own show in Barcelona this winter.

Keep up the search, Rocío Molina/Mujeres is well worth the waiting and the effort!
Around 20th of May are anyhow great flamenco-days in Barcelona. The Festival Flamenco de Ciutat Vella (de perlas) takes place between the 19th and 23rd of May.
If you want to see dance, I would recommend
20th: María Pagés ‘Flamenco y poesía’ at 23h.
21st: Isabel Bayón ‘Tan solo flamenco’ at 23h.
22nd: Joaquín Grilo and Pastora Galván (sister of the last decade's most inventive and awarded male flamenco dancer Israel Galván and herself, in my opinion, one of the most outstanding young bailaoras of today) dancing to David Peña Dorantes piano in 'Piano abierto' at 23h.
All of these performances could be very special experiences and it's hard to pick any before the others.
Singing/Guitar:
19th: Enrique Morente singing to the guitar of Tomatito (who used to play with Camarón de la Isla, the great song legend who died at age 41 in 1992). Two of the most important flamencos of the past decades! At 20h.
20th: La Macanita. Raw and in the outstanding tradition of female flamenco singers from Jerez. At 22h in Pati de les dones (The women's patio), one hour before María Pagés enters the same stage...
