Sao Miguel, Azores

I will be on the island of Sao Miguel in September for 5 days to hike. Do I need to rent a car or can I get away with cabbing it to various trail heads? Or is it easy to bike to these trails? I'd rather not rent a car if I can get away with it. thanks!

We rented a car. I am not sure how we would have seen anything without a car. Maybe tours but we prefer to be independent. Roads to the main sights are well paved. We loved Sao Miguel...don't miss Sete Cidades and Lago do Fogo. Simply stunning. And we really enjoyed Furnas including the spectacular gardens at Terra Nostra

Want to add that I would not recommend biking on the main roads - very hilly and narrow
