Santorini and Mykonos

Santorini and Mykonos
īll be stopping in Santorini and Mykonos on a Cruise soon. I need recomendations if itīs worth it to take the ship excursions (expensive!!!) or if itīs better to just walk from the port, take a cab or rent a car. Also, the best places to go in those islands. Thank you!!

Taxi's in Mykonos are usually not too expensive due to the size of the island - the problem is they are very busy and you can sometimes wait hours for one. The bus is a really great option however, lots of connections to the various beaches which are the main attractions on the island.
As brotherlee says, it all depends on how much time you have.

Have you checked out the message boards at www.cruisecritic.com ? It provides a wealth of information that everyone shares. We are visitng those same places on Celebrity Galaxy in Nov., and by digging through that site, we are doing both places on our own, just like many others. Apparently it is just too easy, and so much more economical. Have fun and have a great cruise!

My personal experience some years ago:
At Santorini we took the excursion to Oia, which is the classic Greek-Isle image you see in every brochure, and why we were there. The ship anchors in the middle of the lagoon, and boats take you to the small port of Ammoudi where you take the bus. Oia and Fira are on the ridge, 700+ mtrs high, so you better not try it on your own. We were left on our own in Oia, it was very pleasant. At a certain time we met in the bus and were taken to Fira, with plenty of time to have a wine and stroll. We were to take a boat to the ship in the small port below Fira, you can go down either on telpher, or on donkey or walking down a paved zig-zagging lane (which takes 30 min.). We chose the fast telpher, but in the end, the line was half an hour, so I recommend walking.
Mikonos: we took no excursions. From the berth we were given a pass for the public bus to the Mikonos town port (5 min.), and there we walked making the opposite route everybody does; so we started at Paraportiani church and walked to little Venice and the mills, very quiet. Then we went to the shopping street where everybody was. We returned by the public bus and drank a bottle of local white wine at a very handy terrace at the berth, and were almost the last back into the ship (but in time, of course).
I planned all this in advance with the Fodor's guide. Do your homework.
