Vicky,
The cats are not stray but they are working cats who live outdoors around the chicken coops and small farms. They are variously doted upon or not, depending on owner attitude. Not all are fluffy and clear-eyed, so if it would upset you to see those, go for a seaside walk in Zoagli instead.
mjs,
How much time you spend depends on how much time for hedonistic relaxation you want vs how antsy you will feel being in art+history jammed Italy and skipping sightseeing. Some people arrive in the Riviera and really regret the choice, as there is little to do except shop, eat, swim, hike and snooze or take boat rides, no matter which town you visit. It's all very pretty and delicious, but some people feel like it's a waste of time and money to go thousands of miles to do that. Others arrive in the Riviera and it is the absolute highlight of their trip to Italy. They really didn't enjoy stomping around the hot, crowded art cities, with pollution up their noses, sightseeing felt more exhausting & irritating than uplifting & energizing -- so entering into a paradise of flowers, open vistas, beautiful colors everywhere, no pressure to "sightsee", delicious seafood and vegetarian dishes, gorgeous sunsets, wonderful smells & breezes -- they never want to leave.
