San Sebastian or Croatia in August?
Hi Fellow Travellers, please help choose between SS or Croatia for travel this August. Some criteria:
- somewhere relaxing, with gorgeous scenery
- close to water, opportunity to sail or even swim in the sea
- not too many tourists (we live in tourist central, so this trip is an escape)
- not too hot in August
- good options for lodging and restaurants that are not too pricey (under $250 for a clean charming place to stay)
- we have two weeks
We're thinking about SS and Croatia because we've been to neither and b/c we want somewhere similar to the Amalfi Coast but less touristy. Would love to hear your suggestions.

Any beautiful coast in Europe is a place for Europeans to vacation in August, which is when everyone takes their few weeks off. That said, San Sebastian is everything you want except for the lack of tourists. You can rent boats to sail (though I recommend going down the coast and finding a smaller port unless you are experienced) and you can for sure swim in the sea.
It is not so hot in August in SS as it is in the rest of Spain, but it is definitely warm.
SS is one of the most expensive cities in Spain, which is the cheapest country in Western Europe, but it will not be as cheap as Croatia for sure.
I cannot say anything about Croatia as I have yet to visit it, but I think that SS is a good option for what you are looking for.
