Hi,

We are travelling to Spain second half of October and planning to visit San Sebastian on 30th and 31st October. Weather predictions show a bit of rain.
How bad is it? Will we waste the two days due to rain?
We chose San Sebastian for beaches and food.
Should we opt for another place in Spain?
We are in Barcelona till 29th Oct. What could be the other options if we need to change the itinerary?
PS: Andalusia would be covered in first half of our trip.

Would rain interfere with your enjoyment? It would for some people; not for others. Whether you would find it a "waste" is something only you can judge.

Have you considered southern Spain?

IMO, you can get excellent Basque food outside of San Sebastian and excellent food almost anywhere in Spain.

If you don't already have one, I would recommend a good guidebook. In comparison to the cost of your trip, the cost of a guidebook will be nominal, and you will have a wealth of information at your fingertips.

Well, expect kind of cool weather and maybe rain (average rainfall in SS is 200 days per year). It´s not a beach resort and it would not be the place to go to enjoy a beach day. It´s not the Mediterranean sea, it´s the Atlantic and therefore, quite colder and rougher. All northern Spanish coast offers similar weather. Green, beautiful scenery, with mountains and forests and great beaches.

Food is wonderful all over the Basque Country, not only in San Sebastian.

How could anyone tell you if a bunch of water falling from the sky six weeks from now will make you cranky or ruin your vacation?

Where are you finding a prediction for weather that will occur a month from now? I was there same time last year. One hardy soul was swimming but the only beachgoets were of the canine variety, with their humans. We had one very rainy day out of seven.

Although I agree a weather prediction this far out is unreliable, I don't find your question unreasonable at all if you've never been to San Sebastian and are hoping for a vacation that is half about enjoying beaches. Travel is expensive and time-consuming and one only has so many opportunities. Message forums are one good place to go (sometimes) to ask questions -- although this is a notoriously rude and mocking and insulting one, especially when St Cirq is posting her narrow minded point of view about travel in Europe. You might find it more congenial elsewhere.

Having been to San Sebastian twice, I personally would not go with such a high risk of rain if I was really hoping to enjoy outdoor activities (and there is little to do of interest to me indoors, and bus trips to Bilbao are a drag.) There is part of me that could definitely hole up in San Sebastian for days on end, rain or shine, just enjoying eating. But if I was in the mood for walks, enjoying seaside beauty, scenic drives or hikes, I'd head someplace where it is more likely to be dry and sunny in Spain in October.

Just so you know, people do often ask weather-related questions on Fodor's and some people will respond helpfully -- although I have to admit that is more likely to happen if you are a long-time poster than if you are a new to the Europe forum. As Mikel explained, this is Green Spain, not the Med resort coast. You can expect at least one day of rain every three days, which is why you don't go for the weather, you just hope for the best and come prepared.

If you're looking for warmer weather and a possibility of warmer waters, then you might consider heading for Cádiz instead.

In any case Barcelona is quite far from San Sebastián for a 2 night visit.
